A few years ago, after a particularly difficult time tasked with training pilots in the Middle East. I wanted some ‘me’ time…..to reflect and evaluate if I needed the hassle and the ‘uncertainty’.
Did my family then need the pressure to wonder if I’d be coming home after my next rotation. At that time, yes the money was good, but we lived daily with the mortars, the threats when aviating…and pilots under training that more often than not needed more supervision than a toddler with a blow torch!
…..so when I came home, I took my dogs for a walk along the canal…..it was about 10:00 in the morning.
A canal boat passed me, I looked up, and immediately recognised the skipper. He was my old Chief Pilot at Virgin Atlantic.
I ran up to the lock with my two golden retrievers, excited for the increase in pace, but am sure as always no idea why they should be.
I caught up with the canal boat, and yes it was my ex Chief Pilot, Dudley…..I hadn’t seen him for almost 10 years. Not since he ‘hijacked’ my final line check after training on the Boeing 747-400.
A line check flight to New York, where he said at the Briefing, “I’m only here to see if you are any bloody good!”
So no pressure! But when you flew with Dudley, you knew you were in good hands. He was a man’s man, spoke what he thought. One of a kind, and the nicest, kindest most helpful guy you’d ever meet.
When at the lock, I called out ‘Dudley’….he replied ‘Carter’!
I asked how he was doing? He replied, “I’ve seen the world at 400 knots, now I see it at 4 knots”.
Now, I can never tread in Dudley’s footsteps, pretend to be an aviator as he was.
But, I’ve bought a canal boat, and am going to spend the summer writing my story on it. Dudley will always be there, spurring me on.
But my tales will never live up to Dudley’s….but he will always be there.
