Insane moment!!! Sometimes mackerel/sardines attempt to escape their predators and seek refuge behind divers, so I became a human shield for a split second here. At first I wasn’t sure if I should try and get out of the way or keep the camera steady, but I quickly realized I had to put all my trust in the marlin to not skewer me! Lucky for me, striped marlin are highly agile intelligent animals and possess great eyesight. They are very careful with their bill, as they need it to hunt and survive. I could tell you that this bait fish got away and lived happily ever after, but we all know what happened next…

Is anyone interested in Socorro for May? I am trying to get a group together. There has been incredible last minute deals this season.

May in Socorro is baitball season and also a great time to see false killer whales and whale sharks. Water will be around 80F and visibility will be great. The mantas, dolphins, hammerheads, and tuna will be there as always.

We can also see makos and blue sharks in Cabo before or after the liveaboard. Please let me if you are interested!

Farnsworth Banks - Backside Catalina

Healthy Purple Hydrocorals!!! These beautiful cold water corals can be found in huge numbers on the backside of Catalina Island. The dive site, Farnsworth Banks, is one of the best places in the world to view them. When you drop down to around 80 feet, you are surrounded by colorful corals as far as the eye can see, huge schools of fish, and of course kelp. The first time I came here I was blown away by how healthy the reef was, and how cold the water was! The area is not protected however, so there are usually a number of fishing boats in the area. Did you know corals could thrive at such low temperatures?

Giant Black Sea Bass - Casino Point, Catalina

Not the best viz, but always a good day getting in the water, especially when the Giant Black Sea Bass are in town! There were around 10 hanging out in the kelp on this dive off Catalina Island. They have made a remarkable recovery, but unfortunately they are still being hunted. Another diver pulled a spear out of one in the Casino Point marine park. Hopefully their numbers continue to increase and we can enjoy spending time with them when they return in the summer months to breed.

Dolphin Attack 😂

Have you ever seen dolphins messing with another animal in the ocean? Well now ya have. The dolphins in Socorro love interacting with the other pelagic species, but the manta does not look thrilled about it.
