🎭 Theater Spotlight: The Regent – A Century of Culture in DTLA 🎭

If these walls could talk, The Regent Theater would have a century’s worth of stories to tell.

✨ Built in 1914, this historic venue first opened as the National Theatre, a modest 600-seat cinema showing silent films. By 1917, it became The Regent, one of the first theaters in Los Angeles to embrace movies with sound—a revolutionary moment in entertainment.

Through the roaring ‘20s, the theater stood resilient as Broadway’s grand movie palaces took center stage, adapting to show second-run films before evolving into a grindhouse theater in later decades. The Regent eventually fell silent in the early 2000s, its marquee dark, waiting for a new act.

In 2012, music promoter Mitchell Frank saw potential beyond the dust and decay. With a bold vision, he led a transformation—adding a mezzanine, bar, and pizzeria, reviving the space as a live music venue. By 2014, The Regent was reborn, buzzing once again with the energy of concerts, film screenings, dance nights, and theater performances.

Today, its Gothic Revival details, proscenium arch, and storied past make it one of DTLA’s most iconic cultural landmarks. Whether you’re catching a show or grabbing a slice, The Regent remains a place where history and modern creativity collide.

Happy Throwback Thursday! 🎥🍿The Broadway Theater District in the Historic Core of Downtown Los Angeles is an unparalleled cultural gem and the first and largest historic theater district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With twelve iconic movie palaces spanning six blocks of Broadway, it remains the only large concentration of movie palaces left in the United States. 🎭✨

This stretch of Broadway, once the retail hub of Los Angeles, was lined with department stores and specialty shops during the first half of the 20th century. But its crowning glory has always been its theaters. Over the next 12 weeks, we’ll highlight each of these historic gems and their unique stories. 🌟

The twelve theaters that still stand in the Broadway District, from north to south, are:
• Million Dollar Theater
• Roxie Theatre
• Cameo Theatre
• Arcade Theatre
• Los Angeles Theatre
• Palace Theatre
• State Theatre
• Globe Theatre
• Tower Theatre
• Rialto Theater
• Orpheum Theatre
• United Artists Theater (now The Theatre at Ace Hotel)

Tune in for our first feature on the Million Dollar Theater next week as we explore its significance to DTLA! 🎬

Take a stroll down memory lane with us as we highlight nearly fifty years of transformation in Downtown Los Angeles.

The 1959/1960 image, taken from just west of the Harbor Freeway, reveals a DTLA before high-rise fever struck. With height restrictions lifted in the 1950s, the city was still largely low-slung, featuring now-lost landmarks like the Statler Hilton (Wilshire Grand) and the Richfield Tower. Yet, you can still spot the Superior Oil Building, now the Standard Hotel, standing tall in its former glory.

Fast forward to 2018, and you’ll see an entirely new skyline captured by Hunter Kerhart. Modern high-rises like the Wilshire Grand and City National Plaza dominate the landscape, showcasing a city that continues to evolve while 1010 Wilshire quietly remains as a lone reminder of the past.

DTLA’s transformation is a testament to its resilience and growth, balancing its rich history with a vibrant future. 🌆

Our Story

The Historic Core is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the City of Los Angeles.

Our community is made up of nearly 1:1 market rate and low income housing. The Historic Core was the epicenter of residential growth during the early 2000s with the adaptive reuse ordinance, where previously abandoned or underutilized office and manufacturing was converted to housing. Along with the new units, under the 2005 Residential Hotel Ordinance, thousands of units of low income and permanent supportive housing were preserved.

Our mission is to improve the quality of life of residents, property and business owners in Downtown LA’s Historic Core through clean, safe, and enterprise programs.
