I recently led a group of adventurous women on a journey through southern Morocco for a one-week adventure. One of our highlights was visiting Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its appearance in many famous international films. We spent the night in the Draa Valley, home to Morocco’s longest river, stretching 1,200 kilometers—although, fortunately, we didn’t drive the whole length!😂 Our experience also included an overnight stay in the heart of the Sahara Desert, sleeping in nomadic tents beneath the stars. On the final leg of our journey, while most of the group chose to relax, a few of us opted for a more meaningful experience. Instead of simply visiting, we wanted to connect with the local community in a responsible way. We enjoyed lunch with a local family, and borrowed two donkeys from nearby families—not for riding, but to walk them through the fields, immersing ourselves in the daily rhythms of life. We also hired a local guide to share the history of the small oasis, which once played a crucial role in Morocco’s powerful dynasties and the caravan trade routes.
