Friends,

This past week has been incredibly tumultuous. We in the DIY art scene have faced a tragedy in Oakland that has reverberated and impacted our entire community. We believe that spaces like ours are crucial for artists that are working on the fringe, but unfortunately there are those in power that do not understand the importance of holding space in such a way. DIY warehouses exists because space is NOT readily available in large cities where developers and politicians are King. In an exploitative and blindsiding response to the Oakland tragedy, LA's fire chief Mike Feuer has announced that there will be "aggressive action" to evict those living and working in DIY spaces. In other words, more power is going to the developers who want to gentrify our city.

This promise has now affected Montserrat personally. Due to pressure and threats from outside sources, we are putting a hold on all large-scale events that might draw the attention of the authorities and neighbors who don't understand what it is we are actually supplying to the city of Los Angeles.

HOWEVER, do not think that we will waver in our commitment to supporting artists and those living against the stream of this deeply oppressive system. If you are ever feeling lonely, angry, confused or unsupported, give us a call and come by. We are here for you. We will continue to hold space and are committed to finding safe ways to commune. We love you. We will overcome.

Welcome Back to Tomorrow!

The campaign to keep Play Collaborative Arts Venue in the Arts District continues, and this time we’ve got some real live performing arts to talk to you about!

Last year play brought you EROTICA, “a carnal evening of written word and immersive performance,” and we brought the house down. Almost literally. It wasn’t long after that our current sojourn began. Is it possible that when you explore the vice fueled limits of human desire one attracts a certain kind of stern attention from the LAPD?

While we learned our lesson and are all set to be good, compliant little bois and grrls that doesn’t mean we’ve lost our subversive streak. Oh, no. Far from it. We’re just looking to the future now, is all.

And the future arrives on October 20th with FUTURErotica!

Tickets will go on sale next month but right now they are exclusively available to backers at the $100 level here on IndieGoGo. Each backer at that level receives two tickets to FUTURErotica and will also be helping to fuel play’s own future in the Arts District.
