One of our most asked questions from visitors… How do we get to the Swinging Foot Bridge?
We’re glad you asked, because we would love to show you! There are 2 trails that lead to the bridge, with 4 different trail heads.
The first trail is the Gorge Overlook Trail. Both trailheads for this loop are at the Gorge Overlook. There is a trailhead to the left of the parking lot and another to the right of the Gorge Overlook. While these are for the same trail, we do recommend starting at the trailhead on the left, due to the difficulty of this trail. This 1.8 mile loop starts at the top of the Gorge, descends down, travels alongside the river, and then ascends back up the Gorge.
The second trail is the Hemlock Gorge Trail. This is a 2.4 mile linear trail located between Mohican State Parks Campground A and Campground B. The first trailhead is located at the back of Campground A. To access this portion of the trail come in the entrance for the Campground on State Route 3. Monday through Thursday you may be able to drive back to the camp store located in the park. Friday through Sunday you will need to park at the parking lot to the right of the front check-in office and either walk through the park to get to the trailhead or you may also take the North Rim Trail. From the trailhead of the Hemlock Gorge trail it is an easy 0.9 miles to the Swinging Foot Bridge. After viewing the bridge, you will need to return the way you came. The second trailhead for this trail is located at the back of Campground B. In order to get there, you will need to park at the Mohican Covered Bridge on Park Road. From either parking lot at the bridge you will follow the signs to Campground B and walk about ¾ miles to the back of the campground. From here the Swinging Foot Bridge is a moderate 1.4 mile hike. Once reaching the bridge you will need to turn around and return the way you came.
Any way you go, these hikes are beautiful and well worth the trip! Don’t forget to take a photo with the shelf installed at the Bridge and tag !
