GLAMPING? THIS IS A NEW, POPULAR VACATION OPTION
As an old Boy Scout who camped all over the mountains in and around the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and as a long-time counselor at our kids’ camp, I have camped in the woods among nature A LOT. I am very familiar with camping, but not so familiar with glamping. You may or may not be familiar with the term, but glamping, simply defined as luxury camping, is becoming a popular vacation option. Imagine an old cabin in the woods or a 100-year-old barn on a remote country farm converted into a luxury space with electricity, indoor plumbing, king beds, a cozy fireplace & even Wi-Fi. You are amid nature, but still have the amenities of a luxury hotel. Sounds like a vacation hit to me. I have glamping destinations all over. RAIL TRAVEL IS STILL A WONDERFUL WAY TO GET THERE!

Over the last many years of travel, we have taken three Amtrak rail trips with overnight stays on the train. We have enjoyed rail travel and would recommend passenger rail travel as a very scenic, leisurely way to travel. Our Amtrak round trip rail journey from Chicago to Glacier National Park was certainly one of our favorite vacations. We included a sleeping room on our trip to Glacier & having a sleeping room was worth the extra cost to us. A sleeping room or roomette includes meals in the very nice dining car and includes access to the comfortable, full window observation car. If you have never traveled by train, it really is a great way to travel. You can enjoy relaxing as the beautiful scenery rolls by. SOME GENERAL TRAVEL TIPS
Traveling has changed in the last few years. It is, unfortunately, more difficult and often more stressful. If your travel includes any lengthy air travel, you may want to keep your blood pressure meds handy. Air travel now tests your endurance & patience in ways You really could do without. BUT, I still love to travel and constantly strive to make the getting there easier. So, here are a few tips that have helped with my travels and could lower YOUR stress levels.

LUGGAGE TRACKING TAGS-If you have ever had delayed or lost luggage after flying somewhere, you might consider a technology that I know as luggage tracking tags. Apple offers a tag that you put in your luggage that pings off any other apple device nearby and tracks where your bag is. You can track your bag as it is coming to your carousel for pickup or you can tell the airline rep that your bag is across the airport, when it does not arrive on time. These tags cost about $25 apiece.

WALLETS THAT CANNOT BE SCANNED-There are bad guys and gals who are sitting around in the mall or in the airport with a scanner that can detect the credit cards that you are carrying and when they have the information from your card, they can buy their new TV with your card. You can get a wallet or card holder that blocks these scanning attempts. We have passport holders that have compartments to hold credit cards, picture ID’s, etc. We bought our passport holders at AAA. You are looking for a wallet or card holder that is RFID blocking.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE-If you are traveling internationally, you may want to exchange some US dollars into the currency that is in your travel destination. Your bank may be able to get Canadian, Mexican, Euro and British currency within a few days. Most major airports that have frequent passenger flights to international destinations will have currency exchange offices within the airport. It is often easier to do business in local currency and you will get a better price for your purchases without the merchant needing to eventually exchange your US dollars into local currency.

CREDIT CARDS with no foreign exchange fees-Staying on the international travel topic, typical US credit cards charge a foreign transaction/exchange fee when you use them in a foreign country. These fees can add up to a lot of money. BUT, there are credit cards that do not charge foreign fees. Ask your credit card provider about a card that will not charge foreign transaction/exchange fees.

BUNGEE STRINGS-One of the best things I have come across are bungee shoe strings. Bungee strings are elastic strings that you put in your shoes and you do not have to tie your shoe strings. Your running shoes become slipons. If you have to take off your shoes in airport security you only have to slip them back on. You save the time of tying your shoe strings. I have considered putting my shoes in my carry-on and going through security barefoot.

TRAVEL DESTINATION TIPS: A vacation to Puerto Rico could be a great idea for you!
You have probably heard of Puerto Rico and you may have visited this Caribbean island country in the past. I have sent travel clients to Puerto Rico & have sent a lot of cruisers on Caribbean cruises out of Puerto Rico or with a Puerto Rico port day. We did a family vacation in Puerto Rico a few years back and had a very good time. If you have an interest in a vacation in Puerto Rico, here are some Things To Do there. You will probably arrive in San Juan and a must is to see the Old City of San Juan. The Old City is on a peninsula that extends into the Caribbean Sea and dates from the 1500’s. At the sea point of the Old City is Fort Morro, a very impressive old fortress that is even more impressive if seen from the sea. Next to Fort Morro is an enormous great lawn that is a wonderful place to people watch, while enjoying the sea breeze and the ocean view. Next you could be off to El Yunque, a spectacular mountain rain forest maybe 30-40 miles East of San Juan. Lots of great hiking and waterfalls. A few miles further East brings you to Luquillo and the beautiful Luquillo Beach. Adjacent to Luquillo Beach is an area of maybe a couple of dozen beachside food stands & small restaurants. Great choices for wonderful & quick dining. Still a little further East is Fajardo where you can kayak into a bio-bay at night to experience the plankton that lights up when disturbed. Seven Seas Beach is a very nice, well-maintained beach in Fajardo. You can also take the ferry to Culebra, a beautiful out island of Puerto Rico and spend the day or longer on Flamenco Beach. Flamenco Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen & most worthy of a visit. So, my Things To Do in Puerto Rico include San Juan and the Northeast mountainous area of the island. AN ALASKA JUNE 2025 WONDERFUL CRUISE IDEA!

I am constantly looking at cruise offerings and frequently come across very good bargains. A couple of days ago I found an Alaska cruise that is one of the better bargains I have seen in a while. If you are familiar with the specific cruise ship that this Alaska cruise is on, you may describe this ship as a luxury ship. So, to get to the details. I have found a 10 night sailing, round-trip Seattle, departing on June 23, 2025, sailing on the Cunard Queen Elizabeth, with a cruise only total fare, including taxes & fees, of $1213. The itinerary includes Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan & Victoria, plus Glacier Bay, plus Endicott Arm, plus Icy Strait Point. I have a fare quote from Cunard with this price, but it is only a quote. This price may go away or the price may sell out. If you can be gone long enough to take a 10-day Alaska cruise, this price is better than many 7 night 2025 Alaska cruises. This Queen Elizabeth is a NEW Queen Elizabeth, put into service 14 years ago. This new Queen Elizabeth has the elegance & luxury of the original QE it replaced. TOTALITY!!
We sat on our deck yesterday afternoon and watched the sun & moon move to 98% of the sun covered by the moon. Not a total eclipse but only a line of light from the sun. Thanks for the protective glasses. In 2017 we went to near Hopkinsville, KY in August and there saw a total solar eclipse. The total solar eclipse that we saw in 2017 was the most remarkable naturally occurring event I have ever seen. I am so glad I was able to see this total solar eclipse in 2017. As I sat on our deck yesterday and as I lay on the ground in 2017, I realized that God was just messing around. In His creation, God set the moon & sun in such orbits that occasionally you can see this remarkable alignment. I am hard pressed to watch a solar eclipse and not recognize a creation brought about by intelligent design. We are God’s handiwork and our universe is God’s handiwork. Solar eclipses are the results of God’s creation and display His majesty. What wonderful events!!

TRAVEL IN FEBRUARY, MARCH & APRIL-THINK SOMEWHERE WARM
There are so many of you who would love to get away from the cold of winter & spend some time somewhere warm. I will tell you that I do NOT do cold very well anymore. The GOOD news is that many of you CAN get away from the cold of winter You just have to decide to go. For you, here are some very good ideas! I still like the Pink Shell in Ft. Myers. A very nice, off the beaten path is the Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa on South Florida’s East Coast. In the big city is the Mayfair House Hotel in Miami. Still without a passport, consider a warm winter vacation in Puerto Rico, St. Thomas or St. Croix. With a passport, the new Sandals in Jamaica & Bonaire, the new secrets in Punta Cana, the new Beaches in St. Vincent and the Sandals & Royalton in my favorite Caribbean destination of Grenada ALL would be wonderful.

ALL-INCLUSIVE CARIBBEAN RESORT VACATIONS! A GREAT IDEA & BARGAINS CAN BE FOUND!
I have spent some time reading about NEW All-Inclusive resorts that are opening around the Caribbean. A simple travel concept, all-inclusive, means you pay one amount for a stay in a resort, and everything is included in that amount. Everything usually means lodging, meals, entertainment and beach activities. The resort lodging is usually upscale, the food is good, the water is safe to drink, alcoholic beverages are included, and pools and beach areas are only for resort guests. I have read about a brand-new Secrets Tides resort in Punta Cana; new Sandals in Jamaica and Bonaire; and a new Beaches resort in St. Vincent. Grenada is my favorite Caribbean island. Grenada has two wonderful all-inclusive resorts--Sandals and Royalton. If the idea of a vacation to a nice Caribbean beach resort with many nice restaurants on site, with beautiful, RELAXING beaches (think beach naps) then there may be an all-inclusive resort out there for you. Some nice all-inclusive resort options do NOT require a passport.

TRAVELERS LOOKING FOR A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE?

We have taken three Amtrak trips over the years. A round trip, Christmas trip from Chicago to Santa Fe, New Mexico, an early fall round trip from Chicago to Glacier National Park and a one-way trip from Denver to San Francisco and on to Los Angeles. MICHIGAN WINS THE NCAA FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP!
Congratulations to my many first cousins and their extended families, who are all from Michigan and are all BIG Michigan football fans. Michigan played a good game and ended up beating Washington soundly. I picked and cheered for Michigan, so I am happy for all my cousins. College football is now finished for another year. But, Labor Day will come around soon.

A GREAT GIFT IDEA!
We have had a couple of friends that have recently downsized, moving from a larger home to a smaller home. Their downsizing caused them to deal with all their “stuff”. We all have so much stuff. We probably do not need more stuff. So, what about a gift of travel. What about a family trip, a trip with the grandchildren, a trip that will create lasting memories, a trip may be much better than stuff. Imagine a Christmas markets cruise on the rivers of Europe or surfing lessons in view of Diamond Head or a warm tropic family vacation at a Caribbean Sandals All-Inclusive resort. A gift of travel with its family time and family memories sounds better than another Christmas sweater. My vote is for a stay at the Sandals or Royalton resort in Grenada. TWO GREAT TRIPS IN 2024 TO CONSIDER
It’s the day after Thanksgiving and you are probably recovering for the feast you had. Christmas will come quickly and 2024 will be here. Time flies! I want to ask you to consider traveling with us on two trips that I am leading in 2024. In March I am leading a Princess Caribbean cruise that includes a day in the Panama Canal. We have four days at sea and ports in Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Costa Rica and Columbia. We will sail on the Ruby Princess, out of & back to Fort Lauderdale.
I am also leading a tour in Ireland and Scotland in June-July. We will tour Ireland for 8 days and tour Scotland for 4 days. This will be a wonderful tour.

THE BEST COLLEGE FOOTBALL! TENNESSEE VOLS!
This past Friday, Caleb and I drove to Knoxville, driving past the OLD exit to Lake City, which is now the NEW exit to Rocky Top. We got up Saturday morning and decked out in Tennessee Orange. Off to the game! Football Game Day at Tennessee is such an event. We saw the pre-game, highlighted by the team running through the T. We sat in seats in Section O that our best guess is that our parents first bought 62 (or more) years ago. Tennessee won big. Game temp was 60. The crowd was great. The band played Rocky Top. I met a guy from Tellico Plains. We sat in Grandpa’s seats again. Caleb wore a Tennessee hat. All Good.

THE BEST TRIP WE HAVE TAKEN IN YEARS!
PHOENIX, GRAND CANYON, UTAH NATIONAL PARKS!
We returned last week from an Arizona & Utah tour that was truly the best trip we have taken in years. Our tour started with a couple of days seeing Phoenix, highlighted by the Hole-in-the Rock hike, Pinnacle Peak & time in Old Town Scottsdale.
We were then off to a couple of days in the Grand Canyon, highlighted with a spectacular sunset and a breathtaking helicopter ride into the Grand Canyon. We continued to travel into Monument Valley, Bryce National Park, Zion National Park, a walk through the unique Antelope Canyon and the Hoover Dam near Las Vegas.
This trip was a bus tour through Globus, the lead tour company of the Globus Family Brands. Globus was wonderful. Our tour guide was wonderful. I have booked clients on Globus tours, but this was the first Globus tour we have taken. I can now personally recommend Globus and their affiliate brands!
