LGBTQ+ Travel Guide to South Africa with Ntaba African Safaris!

Ntaba African Safaris has some of South Africa's best LGBTQ+ Guides who are so looking forward to sharing South Arica with you!

Unlike the rest of the African Continent, South Africa is worlds apart when it comes to being classed as an LGBTQ+ welcoming destination. In fact, LGBTQ+ people hold rights equal to non-LGBTQ+ people. South Africa was the first country in the world to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation in its constitution, back in 1996. Ten years later, in November 2006, South Africa became the fifth country globally to legalise same-sex marriage; the first and to-date, only, country in the entirety of Africa.

Age of consent was legalised in 2007; same-sex couples are legally allowed to adopt; the right to change legal gender has been in place since 2003; and openly LGBTQ+ people are allowed to serve in the military. Overall, the legal rights, laws and protections are very much in favor of LGBTQ+ people.

The larger cities such as Cape Town and Johannesburg offer a full-scale LGBTQ+ scene, including their own annual Prides. However even some of the smaller cities and towns such as Port Elizabeth, and Stellenbosch in the Western Cape now have bars that have become known as the local LGBTQ+ hangout.

Why Visit South Africa & When to Go
Laws and constitution aside, South Africa as a destination offers something to suit any traveler. The landscape is beautiful, ranging from oceans to mountains to deserts. There is an abundance of outdoor activities to suit active travelers, many beaches along the Garden Route have made it into the Forbes list of the World’s Best Beaches, and for the animal lovers, there are countless safaris available with wildlife that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Being a large country, climate conditions within any one sea*on can vary depending on the region. The summer months in the Cape are hot and dry, while summer in Pretoria and Kwazulu Natal means hot, humid days with a lot of rainfall.

Southern Africa Safari Experiences with Ntaba African Safaris!

Africa at its most memorable
Southern Africa boasts some of the most extraordinary wildlife destinations in Africa: Kruger, Chobe, Etosha, South Luangwa and the Okavango Delta. You can spot vast numbers of elephants, lions, leopards, hyenas, rhinos, Cape buffalo, antelope, and a myriad of other species whilst on self-drives, guided wildlife drives, by foot, or charter flights.

The landscapes in Southern Africa are like no other. There’s famous Table Mountain in South Africa, rising high above Cape Town, the Fish River Canyon in Namibia, the largest canyon in Africa and 350,000 sq miles of semi-arid sandy savannah covering much of Botswana, parts of Namibia and regions of South Africa.

Diversity
Africa exhibits great and fascinating diversities. That diversity is nowhere more dramatic than in Southern Africa.

According to the United Nations, this subregion of the African continent comprises of five countries –Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland.

There are other countries in the southernmost part of the continent that shouldn’t be overlooked when visiting this part of the world, however. They are great stand-alone destinations and easily combined. They include Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

In addition to offering magnificent landscapes and wildlife, Southern Africa provides a variety of accommodation options from 5-star luxury to basic camping. No matter your budget, you will find a great place to base yourself for adventure.

Intimacy
In Southern Africa, you arrive at the lodge (by plane, road transfer or even self-drive) and then you are in the care of the camp’s game rangers. They, and their trackers, are your guides for the next few days until you head off to another camp. Your safari drives happen early in the morning and late in the afternoon, with the hot hours of mid-day spent lounging around the lodge or camp (often by the pool). Is there a better way to spend a day!

One of the most notable qualities of the southern safari experience is intimacy. During game drives, you will feel very close to nature as you cruise along the gamelands in an open-top vehicle with, what feels like, nothing between you and the wild.

National Parks require all vehicles to drive along marked roads but in privately owned game reserves lodges are permitted to drive off-road – this is a huge advantage when looking for animals. Reserves keep strict control of the number of vehicles at each sighting, enhancing the intimate experience.

Safari vehicles are not the only means of transport to explore the region. In Botswana, you can wade the Okavango Delta in a mokoro (dug-out canoe) allowing you to get closer to small, shy animals. It makes for incredible elephant sightings too!

More than safari...
A trip to Southern Africa does not begin and end with a safari. Commonly, visitors to Southern Africa will combine their safari with a trip to the coast or a visit to the magnificent Victoria Falls.

When in southern Africa, you must take the opportunity to visit one or more of the incredible destinations in this sub-region of Africa.

Safari-goers to Kruger National Park often combine their trip with a visit to South Africa’s rugged coastal city, Cape Town. Cape Town provides all the ingredients for an unforgettable adventure. With the jaw-dropping scenery to centuries-old architecture mingling with minimalist modern design, this scenic South African beauty encompasses it all.

The aforementioned Victoria Falls is a spectacle not to miss when in this part of the world. One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and the largest waterfall in the world, Victoria Falls will take your breathe away. With Chobe National Park in Botswana, a couple of hours drive away, the two are commonly combined.

A popular bush and beach combination in Southern Africa is Zambia and Malawi. Although landlocked, Malawi has a beautiful lake spanning 365 miles with beautiful sandy beaches to rival any Indian ocean island! Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park is not far from Malawi and homes 4 of the big 5, not to mention gorgeous lodges and safari camps. A winning combination.

Hi to both Stella Mountain and Robin John Mountain! Sorry it’s taken me so long to respond to your messages. I want to echo what Jane said in her text and to thank you for what certainly was a “bucket list” experience. I, like Jane, have enjoyed relating to friends and family what a fabulous trip this was.

At times now that I’ve returned to “life as I know it”, I pinch myself in wonder! Was I really there? Then I look at my pictures (Yes, Jane, I am going through them! We need a date to get together to share photos! And we want some of Robin’s also!) and remind myself of the wonder of it all. I really WAS there!

People ask me for a favorite moment or what stands out as the most amazing thing I saw. I am hard pressed to narrow it down to just a single experience or sight. To a person, the people we met all along the way left such positive impressions in my head and heart. And for me the time spent on the drives as we searched for animals was nothing short of magical.

Glad that part came at the end as anything we might have done afterwards would have felt anticlimactic. So… many thanks to you both for all of your wonderful planning of every detail and to Robin for being with us every step of the way.

Larry joins me in saying “Cheers” to Ntaba African Safaris! Those traveling with you in the future are in for a real treat!

My wife and I heard about Ntaba through a friend, so we went to them for the planning of our Honeymoon. We worked with Stella and Robin who were amazing every step of the way from the planning process, to the booking process, to being available during the actual trip. United Airlines cancelled our original flight from Newark to Johannesburg, which created a domino effect on our whole trip (intra-Africa flights, hotel bookings, and activity bookings were all going to be missed because of this flight cancellation). However, Stella and Robin miraculously saved the day and were able to rebook our entire 14 night trip to a later date. They both were very flexible, adaptive, accommodating, and understanding of the situation and we are extremely grateful that they had our backs. Our honeymoon included Victoria Falls, Cape Town, and Karongwe Private Game Reserve. Each stop along the way was better than we could have imagined. Ntaba’s attention to detail was outstanding; they provided a travel booklet with vouchers, itinerary, maps, and helpful tips like what to pack and how to decide on gratuity (they even sent us hats and jackets!).

My wife and I had never been to Africa before and now we can’t wait to go back. We HIGHLY recommend Ntaba for your Africa travel needs, they’re the best!
