Adam Baker presents “The Mysterious World of Pollination from the Floral Perspective” this Saturday at 10 AM. This is a great opportunity to learn the mutualistic, symbiotic relationship between plants and pollinators, and how they benefit each other.

Dr. Baker will also give examples of ‘plant this, not that’ and discuss the best planting methods for Monarch waystations and pollinators.

SB89 is being fast-tracked for a vote tomorrow morning as early as 9am in the Kentucky Senate. Nick Hart, KWA’s Policy Director, testified yesterday in front of the Natural Resources & Energy Committee, but the committee cut him off after about one minute and refused additional comments.

Call the Legislative Message Line at 1-800-372-7181 to leave a message for all members of the senate to VOTE NO on SB89. The line is open from 7:00am
- 6:00pm.

If passed SB89 would remove almost all historical protections of Kentucky’s waters including groundwater that two million Kentuckians rely on for drinking water. It would remove protections for springs and streams the Kentuckians rely on or agriculture, bourbon production, outdoor recreation, and also wetlands that help reduce flood risks, filter pollutants from water sources, and store carbon.

Adam Baker, an expert in pollinator ecology and Monarch butterfly conservation, will make a stop at Idlewild to give a unique presentation on the art of pollination-through the eyes of the plants themselves. His deep knowledge of pollinator behavior and conservation strategies will offer a fresh perspective on how plants and pollinators interact, shedding light on the intricate ways plants attract specific pollinators.

Flower has a possible suitor. ❤️ Orchid mantid females are significantly bigger than males and possess large lobes on their legs that mimic petals while the males do not. Their courtship includes the male “drumming” the females back signifying his interest in pairing. He will succeed or possibly become a snack, or both.

It’s a chilly morning, so we thought we’d check in on our butterflies— a beloved butterfly here at Idlewild. These butterflies emerged from their chrysalides this past June and, unlike most, overwinter as adults. During the colder months, they seek refuge in cracks and crevices, entering a state of torpor that allows them to survive the winter. Remarkably, they can prevent their hemolymph (the insect equivalent of blood) from freezing, enabling them to endure the cold.

Happy Winter Solstice.
