The Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center has a long history that has worked towards preserving the wild horses in the neighboring Pryor Mountains. The Mustang Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center was incorporated in 1998 by Reverend Floyd Schwieger and John T. Nickle with initial donations of $300 each. John Nickle served as President and appointed Rev

. Schwieger, Richard Doerr, Jim Edwards, Daphne Hartman, and Phillip Schaeling as the original board. Not long afterwards Hope Ryden, Bill Roberts, Wes Meeker, and Dr. Phillip Sponenberg were added. These were later joined by Cal S. Taggart, Todd Wacaser, Jim Minchow, Kathy Johnsey, LaMoine Sorenson, and Nancy Cerroni. Schwieger, Richard Doerr, and Cal Taggart are now deceased and Wes Meeker and Phillip Schaeling no longer serve on the board. Today's Center evolved from the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Association, a loosely knit group who were supportive of the Pryor horses. Some members of the Association dated back to the local area committee that worked to save the wild horses in the mid 1960's. Some of the members of the committee who remained active through the years were Bob Doerr, Wes Meeker, Rev. Schwieger, Emil Doerr, and Phyllis Hill, along with the Lovell Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Lovell. John Nickle supported the committee as Town Manager of Lovell. They all worked to help Lloyd and Royce Tillett and their families in their battle with the BLM to save the herd of wild horses in the Pryor Mountains. Hope Ryden, then a roving reporter with ABC TV, aided the cause by airing a report on national TV that brought nationwide attention to the plight of the Pryor horses. Finally in 1968, Secretary Stewart Udall established the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range in Montana and Wyoming. This became the first public Wild Horse Range in America. Clyde Reynolds, then Mayor of Lovell, was named to the first Wild Horse National Advisory Board, which convened their first meeting in Lovell. Schwieger liked to say, "come to Lovell to see the first horses on the first wild horse range". In the early 1990's Dale and Daphne Hartman became interested in the Pryor horses. They began adopting and breeding Pryor horses and along with Rev. Schwieger, they founded The Pryor Mountain Mustang Breeders Association. Today the Breeder Association has a large group of registered Pryor horses. One of the purposes of the Association is to have horses with the Pryor bloodline that could be reintroduced to the range if there were a huge loss of Pryor wild horses in the future. The Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center now serves as a permanent advocate group for the Pryor horses. This was the dream of Rev. Schwieger and remains the dream of John Nickle and the Board of Directors. Please join us in supporting the Pryor horses.

Introducing 2024 Pryor Foal #23: Violet's Foal ... His Name is Yarrow
We received word on June 23 that the mare, Violet, had a new foal with her over on Sykes Ridge. The foal, a c**t, is a pretty little bay with a small star. Just today, he was named Yarrow! Violet and her son are part of an interesting family band. They are with Jewel and her other two offspring, Wanderer and her 2024 c**t, Yogo. The band had been with Johan, but for now, it is a true matriarchal band. Johan is somewhere in the Sykes area with the mare, Uushuwate, and her yearling son, Xema.
We give a special "thank you" to Laurie Anne for sharing her remarkable photos that tell the story of the new foal and his family.

We were asked how the mare, Juniper/Jewel, was doing. This lovely buckskin mare is with Nickle's band. Nickle is the 2013 son of the mare, Fool's Gold, and stallion, Coronado/Red Raven. Nickle has a group of beautiful mares and his 2023 son, Xavier.

By Request: Cloud's Pride
At the age of 9, Cloud's Pride has become a confident band stallion to mares, Brumby and Heritage. He, undoubtedly, has learned so much from his experienced mares. Born in 2001, the grulla mare, Brumby, is one of the true "B" girls who is now 23 years old. Heritage is a lovely chestnut roan who is a 17 year old. For the most part, the trio hangs out together quietly. Every once in awhile, Pride chooses to run off to meet up with other stallions in the area.

2024 Pryor Foal #22: Vivianna's Foal - Yip
This is a story when a person has to remind themself that these are wild horses living by the rules of nature. It is not an easy story to tell, nor will it be an easy story to read. The mare, Vivianna, had a foal, a c**t, on June 18. Shortly after his birth, it was apparent the foal was lame and with a zoomed in photo, it was seen that it had a cleft hoof on its right front leg. But he was a little beauty, a grullo with a young mother and a protective grandmother, Hataalii, at its side. He was so little and cute, and the name Yip just fit him to a T. And then nature brought in an unusual turn of events. Two days after his birth, Quanah's band put a lot of pressure on the band. Somehow, the foal was separated from his natal band. By Saturday, he was with Quanah's band. They seemed to accept him into their group. but with no nourishment and his physical problem, he simply could not survive long. On June 24, he was gone from Quanah's band. Nature quietly stepped in.

Oro's Band
Oro's band has come to the mountain top! He is a stunning, bay roan stallion who has shown true grit when it comes to leading his band. It is great to see Niyaha's foal up close. The foal has been named Yatahey which is a spelling variation of a Navaho greeting which means "All is Good." There is one mare missing from the band. The lovely dun mare, Felina, disappeared during the winter. Born in 1998, she would have been 26 this year. The other mares look great! Baileys seems particularly attached to the young foal as she keeps a watch on him.

Introducing 2024 Pryor Foal #20: Yvain
The lovely red dun mare, Titania, has a new look-alike foal by her side. She lives on Sykes Ridge with the stallion, Inniq. Like his mother, and his brother, Wizard, this new foal has the look of Sir Lancelot. The foal has been named Yvain (ee-vain) to carry on the Arthurian legend theme. Yvain was the Knight of the Lion.
We extend a big "thank you" to Wayne McClane for sharing these photographs of Evain.

Introducing 2024 Pryor Foal #19: Yantarni
The young mare, Vesuvia, has a new foal. In keeping with the volcano theme of Pele and Vesuvia, the c**t has been named Yantarni, which is a volcano in Alaska. The foal was first seen with the mare and her band on June 11. The new foal is part of a four-generation band going from Fool's Gold - Pele - Vesuvia - Yantarni. He, too, shares their rich, dun color.

Introducing Two More 2024 Pryor Foals: Sentinel's Band
Sentinel's band has had some unexpected changes in the past month. For one thing, the band has moved from their life-long home in Lower Sykes/Admin Pasture to the lower areas of Burnt Timber. The next big change is there are now three foals in the band. We had introduced Rigel Starr's foal which was born on May 31, 2024. This foal, a filly, now has a name...Yeda Starr.
The 2024 Pryor Foal #18 was born to Virginia City Sue on June 7. It looks like a little black filly. Virginia City Sue is a very shy mare and has not shared a full look at the filly.
On June 12, we were surprised to find a foal curled up by Ultimate Star. This is the 2024 Pryor Foal #21. Sentinel has a third new filly in his band!
The band is extremely skittish so we kept our distance and captured a few photos to share with you. Watch for upcoming reports on foals #19 and #20.

Mustang Country
Lovell, WY has chosen the name "Mustang Country" to represent the beautiful Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range that sits just north of the community. This video definitely shows "Mustang Country" as the wild horses chose to run this past Saturday! What a thrill!

Lovell, Wyoming is the gateway community to the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range. For this reason, the area is known as "Mustang Country."

Introducing 2024 Pryor Foal #17: Rigel Starr's Foal
Sentinel's band gave us quite a surprise at the end of May. The band had moved north from their usual home on the range. A second surprise was added when we noticed a new foal with Rigel Starr. A hike into some rugged country led us to get a closer look at the new Pryor foal with her mother and the rest of her band. The foal is a filly, a little black beauty, with a double star and a long heritage!
FYI: Thanks to so many who wanted to continue with the Foal Introduction posts. We will continue with these, but will add any additional information regarding the foal status on our Foal page on the website.

It was early March when Wildfire disappeared from her mother and the rest of Chief Joseph's band. Finally, on May 27, she made an appearance with Inniq's band! The photo shows the beautiful bay roan with an interested Wizard and a grazing Titania!

It's Time for a Change...
From this point on, we will be making a change in how we report the foal's births and deaths. Today is a good example of why the change is being made. The day was started with reporting two foal deaths. This was followed by three reports of new foals. The foal reports have dominated our FaceBook page. Quite honestly, it has become an emotional roller coaster for us as we create the posts and, most likely, for you, the readers.
In addition to the FaceBook posts, we have been working to stay current on the Foal page on our website. This is the permanent record of the annual foals and includes information and a photo of each foal.
From this point forward, we will be maintaining the foal updates through the website page only. We recommend that you head to this site and bookmark it. It is accessible by phone, but the table format does work better on a computer. The Foal page will be updated regularly, so make sure you check back often to learn of the Pryor Foals of 2024.

Introducing 2024 Pryor Foal #16: La Brava's Filly
The third foal discovered on May 27 was La Brava's filly. La Brava has been with the stallion, Miocene, for several years. Her new foal follows a series of blue roan c**ts. In contrast, this one is a sorrel filly with a blaze. We are still working on a name for this new beauty!

Introducing 2024 Pryor Foal #15: Yolanda
The May 27 story continues...
Meanwhile over on Burnt Timber Ridge, the second foal of the day was discovered. This one is Sophia's new daughter who has been named Yolanda...just a beautiful, feminine name to go along with her mother's name. Yolanda is with her mother, and the stallion, Tex. She is a flashy black foal with a blaze and two hind stockings.

Introducing 2024 Pryor Foal #14:
May 27 was a day for new foal discoveries! We'll share three posts today, each focusing on a foal from that day.
The first foal find of the day was from the mare, Jewel, in Johan's band. This horse has maintained the wild, wary behavior seen in so many mares. The new foal is a beautiful bay with a wide blaze. At this point, we think it is a c**t, but will wait for confirmation on that. The foal has been named, Yogo, for Yogo Gulch of Montana, where the beautiful Yogo Sapphires are found. Whether a c**t or filly, the name is a perfect connection to Jewel. Yogo joins siblings, Violet and Wanderer, in their remote home on Sykes Ridge.
Thanks to Dennis and T***s for sharing photos and information about this new foal.

Loss...
These are always the hardest posts to write...those of loss. On Saturday, May 26, it was noticed that Yuma was not with his mother, Hataalii, in Orlando's band. This was confirmed on the next day and again on Monday, May 27. The only conclusion is that this young foal is deceased. He was the first foal of 2024, born on April 9.
And then...on May 26, a friend found the body of a very young foal. We do not know who the mother of this foal is or what caused his death. A record of this foal's birth has been recorded. He was the 13th foal of 2024. He has been named Yonder.
The causes of death for both Yuma and Yonder are secrets for the mountain to keep.

Introducing 2024 Pryor Foal #12: Yellowtail
The mare, Feldspar, is one of the successful on the Pryors. On May 11, she had a new foal with her...a little dun c**t. While Feldspar is now with Okomi, the foal's sire is most likely Shoshone. The name, Yellowtail, has such a strong connection to the land of the Pryors. .Robert Yellowtail was a man whose name was shared with the Yellowtail Habitat. The Shoshone River passes through this beautiful area bringing an even deeper meaning to the name.
Watch Yellowtail in this beautiful video from Jessica Pingle. Thank you, Jessica, for sharing this with all of us!

Quaid's Foals!!
So exciting to get these photos from Jack Sterling of the two 2024 foals in Quaid's band! We have chosen the name, Yosemite, for Quintasket's foal. He is a little look-alike of his sire, Quaid, with the large star and small snip. He joins his half sister, Ygritte, who is the daughter of the mare, Galena. The pictures of the two foals together bring back memories from 2006 when Galena and her half-brother, Galaxy, were part of Lakota's band.
Thank you so much, Jack Sterling, for sharing these great photos of Ygritte and Yosemite!

Introducing 2024 Pryor Foal #11: Yellowstone
It was just a matter of time before the name "Yellowstone" was used for a 2024 Pryor foal. This iconic national park is shared by Montana and Wyoming, as is the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range. It was May 2 when a foal was first seen with the mare, Pegasus, and stallion, Missoula. Such a surprise to find a blaze-faced, sorrel c**t who looked just like his sire. The name, Yellowstone, was a perfect fit!
Thanks to Katie and Angie for braving the cold, windy day to take these photos.
