June 6th, 1944.
A momentous day that truly changed the tide of world history forever.
80 years ago today.
The anniversary is being commemorated around the world today. Especially in France, but also in the USA, in Britain, & in Canada.
As a Central Virginia based company we’re always proud to highlight the devastating losses of the ‘Bedford Boys’.
Our local guides also ensure our clients leave Normandy understanding the very real partnership between the Americans, British, & Canadians that was required for Operation Overlord’s success.
It’s widely known that American troops landed on Utah & Omaha beaches, facing particularly tough resistance on Omaha. But there were landings on a total of five beaches that day, plus airdrops of 1000s of paratroopers.
The British landed on Gold & Sword beaches & the Canadians on Juno.
All three nations suffered terrible losses, with the Canadians suffering the highest losses in terms of casualties to force size.

Wrapping up a fantastic -focused Spring Break program for Westover Honors College at University of Lynchburg, led by Dr. Price Blair.
In just 8 days in Europe these students traveled through 5 countries (Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, France, Switzerland) visiting locations that inspired or featured in the novel, learning elements of European & literary history, anatomy, geography, & geology, walking 1000s of steps per day, eating local, & having lots of fun!

Ever wondered how doctors, artists, & others learned about human anatomy in centuries past, with cadavers in short supply & no refrigeration? Wax anatomical models!
During the Enlightenment (late 17th-early 19th centuries) Bologna & Florence were home to superbly-skilled artists known for their incredibly detailed anatomical waxes of partial or whole human bodies.
Perhaps none of these creations represented this marriage of art & science better than the so-called 'Anatomical Venus', a life-like reclining beauty, complete with pearls & real human hair, whose innards can be removed, layer by layer!

The anatomical waxes of Florence's La Specola Museum & Bologna's Palazzo Poggi, along with the world's oldest anatomical theatre, the riches of Renaissance art, & more will be the focus of our new tour...

Today, Veterans Day in the United States, is Remembrance Day in most of the English-speaking world (the UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, India, South Africa, etc), in commemoration of those members of the armed forces who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The date, November 11th, recalls the exact moment that hostilities ceased at the end of World War One - at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
In many countries it's also known as Poppy Day. These bright-red flowers, which continued to grow in the war-ravaged fields of Flanders, came to be associated with remembrance.
Artificial poppies are still sold & worn today in many English-speaking countries, raising funds for veterans associations.

We're getting excited for our German Christmas Markets 2023 tour. We'll be staying in Dresden, Leipzig, & Berlin (numbers 1, 2, & 4 on this list!) with visits to Prague & Potsdam too.
PS: Next year we're heading to Bavaria for the Christmas Markets in Nuremberg, Rothenburg, Munich, & Salzburg. Why not join us?

France’s spectacular Mont Saint-Michel abbey is this month celebrating 1,000 years amid concerns that it’s being swamped by too many tourists.
