It's cold up here!

Have you wondered why sections of the Parkway remain closed for winter weather even when the sun seems to have melted all the ice away? The Parkway's high elevations, ranging over 6,000 feet, remain at freezing temperatures long after lower elevations have warmed.

Our goal is to provide access to as much of the Parkway as possible. Our staff evaluate and reevaluate closed areas to ensure sections are opened as soon as they're deemed safe for visitors.

Plan ahead - road status and closures are updated on our website. We hope to see you recreating responsibly in our open sections! Please continue to be patient and respect our closures.
