Corn update: WARNING!
We have corn today and will tomorrow but after that it will be day to day. I do not expect to still have corn by the weekend. So get in your last licks!

Corn update: corn supply is very good for now. But I moved into the last planting today. It’s just the start of that planting. It should last at least a week but probably not 2 weeks. As I predicted early in the season, I don’t expect to have corn in October this year. So be prepared for the end of the season. Just a warning.

We get paid with a fair amount of cash and I’m always on the lookout for interesting coins. These are some of the goodies we’ve gotten over the years. A silver certificate, an Indian head penny, mercury dime and a couple of silver quarters. Also pictured here are 4 Kennedy half dollars and an Eisenhower dollar we got last week in our coin box. They appear to be proofs or at the least uncirculated coins in perfect condition. So cool to get these gems in our coin box. Thank you!!

Corn update:
Supply has been good and sales have also been good this year. Thank you!. It’s been a great growing season even though it was filled with some very hot days, too much rain followed by not enough rain and back and forth. The timing of the heat was good for pumpkins. I’m very optimistic about the pumpkins this year, but that’s another story. My goal is always to have enough quality sweet corn at the right stage throughout the season. It’s been 35 days since we dragged the stand out to the road and we haven’t run out yet. I would expect to make it to the middle of September or maybe into the third week before it’s over. Last year we went until almost November. I doubt this will happen again this year. So we’re more than halfway through the season. But there is some very nice sweet corn coming up. Starting today I’m picking out of a different field that looks nice. I always try to eat our corn almost every day. I thought tonight’s was one of the best this season. The corn is just at the right stage and there’s an another few plantings right behind this one. Labor Day weekend is historically our biggest weekend for corn sales. Rain or shine, I will have the stand full of corn by 10:00. And tomoatoes!!!

Corn update: We’re open!

07/26/2024

Corn Update: it’s almost time. We should have corn for sale starting between Sunday and Tuesday . The first variety will be Bolt. The first three varieties this year will be from a different class of corn than I’ve offered before. They are in the Super Sweet class. That’s not a description of the sweetness. It’s a family of corn that has a sweet gene and better holding capacity, meaning it stays sweet after picking for a longer period of time. Super sweets have been around for many years but I didn’t grow them because they have to be isolated from other corns. Also when they first came out they were tougher than the tender corn my customers were used to. However they’ve made improvements and many claim that they are in fact sweeter than the synergistic types I’ve grown in the past. The other reason I’m growing them this year is Pursuit is no longer available and that was my favorite variety (although I have a few rows of Pursuit later in the summer from leftover seed). You’ll have to tell me what you think. Most of the research and development today is with the Super Sweets, so I owe to you and to myself to try a few varieties and see how they compare.
But we’ll be back in business very soon! Stay tuned for updates.

Some photos of crops as they look today 9/7/24.
Pumpkins look nice. This is two different fields.
The corn in this photo is my earliest corn. There’s now silt viable. The rule of thumb is it should be ready 3 weeks from silt. So that would mean 7/28 (give or take 5 days ). So I’ll stick with my August 1st prediction.

This is a preliminary photo of this years maze. Because my daughter, Ginger and her family, live in Africa , we are making Africa our theme for this year. We hope to have African drummers wondering around the maze and the property to add an African flavor. The corn will fill in in the next few weeks and we’ll get another photo then.

Corn update: the corn is beginning to tassel! That’s early for me. Still too early to predict opening day. But we’re about a month away. I’m trying something new this year. This corn is a super sweet variety. That’s a family of sweet corn that has better holding qualities and is supposed to be sweeter than sugar enhanced, or synergistic varieties I usually grow. I’ve shied away from these varieties in the past because they need to be isolated from other corn. Also , in the past they were not as tender. But it’s really because I can’t get my favorite variety (Pursuit) anymore that I wanted to try these varieties. So this year I will probably open up with this corn and then I’ll have Pursuit (I had a little left over) and then Remedy. So when it’s ready, you’ll have to tell me how you like it.
