Today is the letter "W", and for it, you can WING IT at the Southeast Arizona Birding Festival!

🐦 The Southeast Arizona Birding Festival is held every August, and brings together people interested in the birding (a.k.a. birdwatching) hobby. It's hosted by the Tucson Audubon Society and is headquartered at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Tucson. This year's festival takes place on August 7th - 11th.

🦆 The festival features four days of workshops, lectures, a vendor expo, and guided field trips all around Southern Arizona - including to Marana's own El Rio Preserve, a riparian preserve where over 250 bird species have been sighted!

🦉 Southeastern Arizona is one of the nation's top birding hotspots, lying at the crossroads of several migration routes and offering a variety of climate types. You can see a wide diversity of birds here year-round!

⛈The Monsoon can be MAGIC!

The geography here in the Sonoran Desert creates dramatic lightning shows during monsoon season, which runs from June to September.

Since this is the first week of the official season, we're rounding up our favorite tips and stories for you!

☔️ The best thing to do during this magical time of year is to find places to hunker down and watch the magnificent sky show when rain is in the forecast.

🌈Rainbows often follow the showers, so you may get a double dip of natural beauty.

OUR SUMMER GUIDE 🕶 from A to Z continues!

For the letter "V", we wanted to let you know about the VISITOR INFORMATION CENTER in Marana!

🗺 The Visitor Center is conveniently located off I-10 between the Marana Rd. and Tangerine Rd. exits. Stop by for maps, directions, information, and recommendations from the friendly Marana Chamber of Commerce staff!

ℹ️ Whether you're a visitor, a resident, or relocating, there's something at the Visitor Center to help you experience and explore one of the fastest-growing communities in Southern Arizona.

🕑 The Center is generally open from 9 AM to 4 PM Monday-Thursday, and 9 AM to Noon on Fridays. It is closed on most major holidays, call ahead to confirm hours.

For today, we have an interesting idea that's just a short drive from Marana...the SCULPTURE PARK at Triangle L Ranch in Oracle!

Visitors are invited to make a donation at a self serve 'Station' - then stroll the 10 acres of trails. Enjoy 100+ contemporary sculptures by over 50 regional artists, sited in a beautiful high-desert environment.

This would make a great sunrise or sunset spot when the temps are a bit cooler, and the park is open from Dawn to Dusk!

Wishing the best of luck to Nana’s Kitchen, Jeremiah’s Italian Ice, and Bisbee Breakfast Club, who are competing in the World Margarita Championship this evening!

The event is hosted by the Southern Arizona Arts & Culture Alliance and brings together the top chefs and mixologists from around the region as they compete for the Judges Choice and People’s Choice awards in the Signature Margarita and Best Bite categories.

Marana’s own Nana’s Kitchen won 1st place in both the Judges and People’s Choice categories for their margaritas in both 2022 and 2023.

Tickets to the event are sold out, but stay tuned as the winners are announced!

Friday

•Chillin at the Chul: Stop by Tohono Chul from 6-9PM on Friday & Saturday for live music, drinks, and light bites at this free event under cool shade trees. Saturdays are family-friendly, with nature-themed entertainment for kids.

•Marana Laughs Comedy Show: Enjoy an evening of clean comedy for the whole family! This month’s show features El Oman and Jan Davidson. Show starts at 7:30PM, at Coyote Trails Elementary School.

Saturday

•Button Brew House Water Olympics: Grab your friends and come to Button Brew House for some of your favorite water games and some excellent craft beer, or just come to watch, but prepare to get splashed! Starts at 1PM on Saturday.

•Casa Marana 6-Year Anniversary Party: Casa Marana celebrates its 6th birthday with a party you won’t want to miss. Celebrate with music, dancing, a piñata smash, champagne toast, and more! The party goes from Noon to close at 2AM!

OUR SUMMER GUIDE 🕶 from A to Z continues!

For the letter "R", we have ROCK CLIMBING at Rock Solid Climbing + Fitness!

🧗 It combines two of people’s favorite things here in Southern Arizona – rock climbing and air conditioning! Rock Solid is great for everyone, from those who are new to climbing to the most seasoned boulderers.

The climbing walls are regularly re-configured, so there’ll be a new challenge each time you come back.

🔥 Tip: At the end of the summer, Rock Solid hosts the Old Pueblo Bouldering Classic, where some of the region’s best climbers compete for cash prizes, with a festival with food, outdoor-related games, and vendors for the whole family.

For the letter "Q" we have the QUEEN OF THE NIGHT!

👑 It’s one of the most unique summertime traditions in Southern Arizona – keeping watch for the mysterious and majestic Queen of the Night, which blooms in a brilliant white flower for only one night each year.

🌸 Tohono Chul has the world’s largest collection of night-blooming cereus cacti, which for all but one night a year, look like an unassuming pile of gray sticks.

🔎 Botanists at Tohono Chul keep close watch on the flowers, and once they do bloom (typically Mid-June to Mid-July, but this can vary), they open the gardens for Bloom Night.

👑 The Queen of the Night only blooms with a few hours’ notice, so be sure to follow Tohono Chul’s social media pages to stay up-to-date with Bloom Watch.

🍷 Old Pueblo Cellars is the only true winery in the Marana area, even though there're several other places to get great wine. The family-owned winery is quickly developing a strong reputation for quality wines.

🍷 They have a tasting room on-site that is open on most afternoons, but reservations are required. You'll be able to taste six wines - two white, four red, made from heat-loving grapes that do well in the desert environment.

⭐️ There's a "National Day" for just about everything, especially during the month of July! Most of them are related to food, which can be a great way to pass the time and support local businesses.

🌭 National Hot Dog Day is on July 19th, so it's a great excuse to have a Sonoran Hot Dog (Southern Arizona's take on a hot dog and our signature street food), or try a Korean-style fried corn dog from Two Hands Corn Dogs, which just opened in Marana!

We have THREE adventures to share with you today!

At Catalina Brewing Company, there's a collection of over a dozen pinball machines from the 70's to today, with a dedicated following that make up the Marana Pinball Collective. Grab a craft beer and show off your pinball skills!

🍿 Movies in Marana, hosted by Marana Parks & Recreation, is back! See a selection of family-friendly movies under the night sky at a variety of Marana's beautiful parks and splash pads. Each night will have food vendors on-site.

🎭 Marana Laughs brings you family-friendly, hilarious comedy and illusionist shows that are free of profanity, vulgarity, or rudeness. Shows are the second Friday of the month at Coyote Trails Elementary School. Tickets start at just $10!

☀️ It’s hot out there, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have nothing to do in Marana and the surrounding area this summer!

We have the thing that many people in Southern Arizona look forward to the most in the summer - Monsoon Season and the LIGHTNING that comes with it!

⚡️ The Fourth of July isn't the only time you can see spectacular light displays in the sky! Mother Nature likes to put on a light show of her own. We may not have the “most” lightning, but we do have the best views of lightning, making the Marana area a unique place to see strikes.

⛈ The monsoon weather pattern brings rain to the area each summer, and you'll love the smell that the rain brings to the desert.

🦘 Bonus "L" Adventure: Locals & Military Days at Ghost Ranch Exotics! This local ranch is home to the largest Capybara Experience in the United States. They offer local/military prices once a month and other specials in the summer.

Saturday, June 8th

•Summer Safari Nights: Head to Reid Park Zoo on Saturday evenings during the summer for cooler temperatures, keeper chats, animal encounters, interactive experiences, and more, plus food, games, and live music. Each night will have a different theme! Saturday 6-8PM.

•Living with Giants at Saguaro National Park West: Discover more about the iconic saguaro cactus, the symbol of the American Southwest! Join one of Saguaro National Park’s biologists for a free talk full of fun facts and stories about saguaros. 11:15AM-Noon at the Red Hills Visitor Center.

Sunday, June 9th

•The Desert as a Provider: Join Saguaro National Park West for a short walk through the desert to learn more about several plants that have supported human habitation in the Sonoran Desert for nearly 8,000 years. 9:15AM-10AM at the Red Hills Visitor Center.

Today's activity is...Harkins Theatres!

🎬 Harkins Theatres at the Arizona Pavilions Shopping Center offers a series of lower-cost kids' movies all summer long, as well as their Tuesday Night Classics, where you can see beloved films on the big screen for only $5. And of course, the latest Hollywood blockbusters play daily!
