Experiencing the pristine Grand Canyon is near the top of many people's travel lists, and for good reason! Enjoying that now means those in the past had to practice good land stewardship. Ensuring the same for those visiting in the future means continuing in those footsteps.

Learn how Hatch and our guests can do that in our latest blog about following Leave No Trace principles.

At Hatch, we are so grateful to call the Grand Canyon our office, and work hard to protect it. Because of this, we practice โ€œLeave No Trace.โ€

! Which geological layer is in the foreground? Bonus point for the age as well.

Answer update: That's the Tapeats Sandstone! It's approximately 508 million years old from the Middle Cambrian period of the Paleozoic Era. In Grand Canyon, it makes up part of the Tonto Group which is the first layer on top of the Great Unconformity. Below that, you're getting into the Inner Gorge made of ancient, tough Vishnu Schist. In it's day, the Tapeats layer would have been made of sandy beaches and river bottoms, similar to modern Atlantic sandy coastlines. (Source: GCNPS)

Friends of Hatch will be recording a live episode of The River Radius Podcast on 6/13 in Cortez, CO. If you're in the area, check it out! (Tickets in the link below.)

Kevin Fedarko, author of The Emerald Mile, will be talking about his new book A Walk In The Park which chronicles the 700+ miles he hiked through the length of Grand Canyon. If you can't make the event, check out the podcast feed later.

Here are the details for our upcoming event โ€“ you won't want to miss this!

We're hosting a live on stage interview with author Kevin Fedarko, A WALK IN THE PARK, at the Sunflower Theatre

Kevin Fedarko wrote THE EMERALD MILE in 2013 telling the story of the dory speed run down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon on peak high water.

His new book, A WALK IN THE PARK, just published this week and tells many stories all layered with the main story of Kevinโ€™s 700+ mile hike coursing the length of the Grand Canyon from Leeโ€™s Ferry to the Grand Wash Cliffs. This books tells about the blisters, the fear and joy, the heights, and most eloquently it tells about the people who visit the Grand Canyon and its inner spaces, and the people who are generationally bound to the Canyon.

In 2016 I interviewed Kevin about the Emerald Mile when the River Radius was a radio show. It is one of my favorite interviews. And I have been anxiously/patiently waiting for this new book to emerge.

Kevin will join me for an interview at the Sunflower Theatre in Cortez, CO, the theatre associated with that original radio station. We will have an audience and you can be in that audience. The theatre seats 110 people with a balcony. This on stage interview will be recorded and we will publish it in July.

Ticket link at the linktree in our bio.

It's again! What canyon is Steve Hatch walking in?

Answer update: it's Blacktail Canyon! This slot canyon has the best river-level view of the Great Unconformity - where two geological layers contact but there's a difference of 1.2 billion (with a B!) years in the age of the layers. Learn more here: https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/grcatime-missing-time.htm

This Ted Hatch talks about some of the earliest wooden boats specially made for whitewater rafting, which were used until the 1950s when most were retired for the newer WWII surplus pontoons (that was last week's FF!). The history of the Galloway boats is interesting in itself, so look out for that future blog!

Ted also talks about Native American relics and pottery, which were taken for souvenirs in that era. Now we follow principles and let things stay where they are.

How many of you would have taken a trip in one of these boats??

Learn more about early river running in Grand Canyon, from archaeological sites to wooden boat models that revolutionized whitewater rafting.

We're starting Trivia Thursdays! We'll start off easy. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Where is this in the canyon?

Answer update: As everyone guessed, the confluence of the Colorado River and the Little Colorado River! The bright turquoise color comes from the high concentration of white dissolved calcium carbonate which combined with the water refracts blue light. This is also the case in Havasu Canyon further downriver.

Everyone who guesses correctly by tomorrow 12pm AZ will be entered into a drawing for a Hatch sticker to be mailed to you. Winner announced next Trivia Thursday, so check back for more!

this week is more of Ted Hatch's interview, this time talking about how the modern rubber river rafts came to be and a bit about the Hatch family history in Utah. He even filmed a Ford commercial with a car on a raft floating down the canyon! (We wish we had a photo or video, but no luck.)

Book a trip with us for this summer to become part of that history! We also have brand new 90th year t-shirts and stickers available in our online shop.
