Just check out the contrast of the albino (leucistic) Lightning Whelk and Kings Crown Conch next to the beautiful True Tulip and Atlantic Scallop shell. As with most living creatures, albinoism can be from inheritance, genetic mutations, diet, living conditions, age, disease, or injury.

It was a rough and wet start to our Shell Island opening morning tour. But we were determined to make it! Tons of shell piles to dig till your hearts content. How cool is this to see? The Conservancy of SWFL and other agencies monitor, protect and record information on all turtle nests. As you may already know, Sea Turtles always return to the beach that they were hatched at for nesting and due to beach erosian and habitat loss, the amount of nests have decreased, therefore their numbers are dwindling.
