The Garden District in New Orleans is one of the most popular areas visited in our city because of the beautiful homes. But do you know why the residents of the 1800's grew these beautiful flower gardens around their homes.
So, what was the primary means of transportation in NOLA around 1850? Horse back or carriages pulled by horses, right? So if you have a lot of horses on your street you have a lot of manure, right? So, the flower gardens were primarily grown to mask the smell of the manure. (and for the beauty too, of course) Can you imagine the smelly Garden District? 😉

The St. Louis Cathedral is not only a New Orleans landmark, but is one of the best known landmarks in the United States. During it's life there was a fire on March 21, 1788, which was on Good Friday. There was also a bomb, which shut the church down from Easter Sunday 1909 to Easter 1910.
The St. Louis Cathedral is the oldest continuously operating cathedral in the United States. First church was constructed in 1718 and was raised to Cathedral rank in 1793. Also, do you know the difference between a catholic cathedral and a catholic church. Catholic churches are run by priests. A Bishop or an Arch-Bishop are in charge of Cathedrals.
We are blessed to have one of the oldest, most interesting and most beautiful Cathedrals in the United States her in New Orleans.

Having been a licensed tour guide in the New Orleans area since 2012, and lived in the Louisiana all of my life, I decided in 2016 that I wanted to start my own tour business and specialize in custom private driving tours. As I’ve come to realize the majority of the visitors that come here spend the most of their time in the French Quarter. It is my passion to show my guests the rest of this beautiful city. New Orleans is such a unique and iconic city with not only great food and music, but also with a lot of history, and many unique landmarks that are both beautiful, and have great back stories about their past.
For example we have an amazing lake which borders our city to the north which I call the “Wow” factor. This is because once my guests see it they will often say “Wow” and many of the people don’t realize this lake even exists. It has many unique characteristics, such as a world record bridge running across it, as well as being the 2nd largest inland salt water lake in the U.S. I usually stop here for my guests to get a group picture and to see it up close, as I describe it’s unusual characteristics.
We also have some of the most beautiful live oak trees in the world here, that are not only amazing to see but have unique qualities, such as the size of their limbs, and the Spanish moss and the resurrection fern growing on their limbs. Most tour companies don’t spend the time I do in showing off and explaining these beautiful trees. (We can even go by “The tree of Life” near the Audubon Zoo.)
We will see several of our unique housing developments, from the low income neighborhoods, (many of which have been rebuilt since Katrina) and the neighborhoods with some of the most opulent mansions and estates in the United States. I also point out that even though we have some economic differences here, we also have diversity, with large populations of Italians, Germans, Irish, Jewish, African Americans, Croations, French, Spanish and other nationalities.
I’ll talk about: French Quarter/Bourbon Street, flood control/canals/pumping stations, Katrina, Treme, second line/funeral processions, Storyville, cemeteries, city park, Lake Pontchartrain, the flood damaged neighborhoods, Lake view neighborhoods, beautiful bayou St. John, festivals, Mardi Gras, Estates/Mansions/theirs owners/architecture/back stories and history of the Garden District and the Universities, the Mississippi river and Louisiana ports, Cruise ships and river cruises, other venues to enjoy, and much more while including humor along the way. I am also experienced in Swamp tours and Plantation tours. I love to talk about our unique wetlands and fishing too.
I will spend a minimum of 3 hours driving around New Orleans talking about many of these unique, iconic, and beautiful sites while telling my guests why and how this area was built and how we handle things today over 300 years later. The rich history, the beauty, the recent developments, the reason for our growth, the wealth, the cultures, Louisiana, the Mississippi river’s part in our history, the Catholic church’s role in our growth, the civil war, the architecture, the funny and interesting back stories of many sites, (like Sammy the banana man) and also a lot of humor and fun along the way.
See why Henley’s Private Tours has so many five star ratings on Tripadvisor, Viator, and Yelp and is recommended by several of the largest hotels in the area. I have created a tour that is personalized and passionate and will never be anything but a small custom private tour so that my guests will to be able to ask questions and have a good time during the tour.
I love this city and it shows in my presentation and my passion.
