Did you know: The temperature of an alligator's nest determines the s*x of the offspring. Females are produced when the temperatures are below 82.4° degrees Fahrenheit , and males are produced at temperatures above 91.4° F. A temperature of 87.8° F will produce an even number of males and females.

Purple Gallinules build up to 4 different nests, but only one is used for egg-laying and incubation. Since the s*xes are very similar, it is not known which s*x selects the nest, but both male and female participate in the construction. When the eggs hatch, a parent sometimes moves the babies to one of the additional nests.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend and longtime team member, Aurelia “Ms. Willie” Hatty. For 20+ years, Ms. Willie has been a beloved part of the Jean Lafitte Swamp Tour family, touching the lives of so many with her kindness, warmth, and generosity.

Ms. Willie’s sweet spirit and giving nature made her not just a colleague but a cherished friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Whether welcoming guests with a smile or supporting her team with unwavering dedication, she embodied the heart and soul of what makes our swamp tour so special. She was our family, and it will be difficult for our swamp family to imagine this place without her.

In honor of her memory, we will be flying our flag at half-mast at the swamp tour this week. Her presence will be deeply missed, but the love and memories she leaves behind will forever remain with us.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and all who loved her during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Ms. Willie. You will always be part of our Jean Lafitte Family

An alligator's eyes, along with his nostrils and ears, are placed on top of his head. This allows the gator to glide along with most of his body under the surface, where his prey cannot see him approaching. There is, however, a downside to this placement: Because a gator's eyes face the sides instead of straight ahead, he has a blind spot in the front and center of his field of vision, just like a chicken.⁠

Alligators use their greenish grey coloring to hide in the swamp waters and vegetation from their prey. They've been observed as using tools, like a stick or vegetation, to appear more like logs or grass to unsuspecting birds, hogs, or nutria rats. | 📸: Captain Louis

We're often asked when is the best time to come down to the bayou for a swamp tour. Well, all the time, sha! Alligators prefer warmer, humid weather, so spring, summer, and fall are the best times to see plenty of gators in our area as well as Great Blue Herons and White Egrets. Winter brings out the fur-bearing (fuzzy) animals, like Nutria, deer, mink, otters and the migratory birds and alligators are still present as long as it is not below freezing. Each season also brings beautiful foliage throughout the area.

Fun fact: Alligators can replace their teeth up to 50 times throughout their lives! They have about 80 teeth at a time, and when one falls out, a new one grows in its place—making them toothy predators for life. 🐊🦷
