Did you know? Alligators don't actually hibernate during colder temperatures, they do something similar called brumation. This means they slow down their metabolism and go into a lethargic state which allows them to expend very little energy and surface only once a day for air so they can hide in the warmth of the mud under water.

Purple Gallinules build up to 4 different nests, but only one is used for egg-laying and incubation. Since the s*xes are very similar, it is not known which s*x selects the nest, but both male and female participate in the construction. When the eggs hatch, a parent sometimes moves the babies to one of the additional nests.

Many people are surprised to learn that although water hyacinths are found throughout Louisiana in bayous, lakes and even drainage ditches, they are not native plants. This floating, flowering plant from South America was introduced into Louisiana around 1903 at the Cotton Exposition in New Orleans. This beautiful, yet invasive, plant forms a dense floating carpet on ponds, lakes and bayous that blocks sunlight.

An alligator's eyes, along with his nostrils and ears, are placed on top of his head. This allows the gator to glide along with most of his body under the surface, where his prey cannot see him approaching. There is, however, a downside to this placement: Because a gator's eyes face the sides instead of straight ahead, he has a blind spot in the front and center of his field of vision, just like a chicken.
