The Hamptons, Korey, Mitch, and Michael, co-owners of French Broad Adventures, are no strangers to rescue operations. As volunteer firefighters at Walnut Community Volunteer Fire Department, they have answered distress calls for heart attacks, car crashes, and the occasional drowning victim. But nothing could have prepared them for what they would face during and in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

Our staff members, whose training and skillset are normally used to entertain tourists while expertly guiding them down the river, were called upon to use their expertise to save lives and recover bodies for grieving families. Along with their rescue work on the river, our staff members shuttled people and provisions—first through floodwaters and then over debris-strewn ground—checked on residents, provided clean food and water, and generally were lifesavers to all.

We've always known that our team is exceptional. French Broad Adventures staff has always been family. Even so, their tireless and heroic work in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene astounded us and surpassed all expectations. We've never been prouder of our team, and we will always be grateful for their selflessness and bravery.

Never been ziplining before? Are you a little nervous to try? Let us put your mind at ease.

Our course is inspected regularly to assure that it consistently meets the Association of Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) Standards for Design, Performance and Inspection for zipline canopy tours. Our operational safety procedures are reviewed by a PVM to meet ACCT's Operation Standards.

🤩🤩 We were the very first company in the WORLD to attain ACCT Operation Accreditation status. 🤩🤩

The Owner/Operators and Managers of French Broad Adventures have a wide breadth of knowledge, training, and numerous relevant certifications that qualify them to operate a zipline canopy tour. Your guides have extensive initial and ongoing training, and will be there every step of the way to be certain that your trip runs smoothly, so you can relax and have fun!

Since Hurricane Helene hit our region, we've received many questions about the French Broad River. We've updated our 'Exploring the French Broad River' page to answer your questions. (link in comments below.)

Some highlights from the page:

We have spoken and written about the 1916 flood in awe, never expecting that we would experience an even greater disaster. During Hurricane Helene, the French Broad River in Asheville crested at 24.67 feet, surpassing the previous record set during the 1916 flood. In Asheville, the river widened to 1,300 feet from its normal width of 380 feet. In Fletcher, the river crested at an astounding 30.31 feet on September 27th.

Hurricane Helene caused significant changes to parts of the French Broad River, including making it wider and deeper in some areas. The storm's intense rainfall and runoff washed away sediment and deposited debris, impacting riverbanks and infrastructure. Thankfully, water quality tests repeatedly show that the water is not contaminated. It is safe for activities like tubing, kayaking, and rafting.

How will the changes to the river affect my whitewater rafting trip?

In brief, it won't. The sections of the river that we take guests on were largely unaffected. You will only notice changes if you are an experienced rafter and kayaker who has spent years on the French Broad River.
