It’s apple picking time! Our bunkhouse started out as a home for our Happy Apples Orchard apple picking team. They only need it during picking season, August, September and October. It sat vacant the rest of the year. We decided to open it to Katy Trail through cyclists, hikers and guests looking for affordable overnight accommodations.
Well, the orchard is full of apples, our amazing crew is back, and the bunkhouse is closed for guests until next spring.

I finally made it to the Turner Katy Trail Shelter in Tebbets, MO today and had the absolute pleasure of meeting Rachel and the Collins Family as they were delivering breakfast to a group of cyclists.

There is a lack of available food in Tebbets, so the Collins family started providing food to the people passing through. Rachel and her girls deliver fresh, home made meals right to the Turner Shelter.

A lot of our Eastward guests come from the shelter and a lot of our Westward guests are heading toward the shelter. Tebbets is 53.5 miles from our Happy Apples Bicycle Bunkhouse in Marthasville. Make sure to give Rachel a call and arrange a meal the next time you’re stopping in, or going through, Tebbets!

Naresh is riding across the USA on a tandem bicycle with friends, supporters and strangers riding along with him. Today Lisa Frick joined him in Marthasville for a few miles.
He is raising $ and awareness to fight against human trafficking. You can follow his journey at freedomseat.org and pedaling4freedom.org
He had already ridden over 2335 miles when I met him in Marthasville.

I’m not sure what our guests like more; the free Happy Apples in the fridge, the farm fresh chicken eggs, the foot massager, the hammock and disk swing in the yard or our comfy beds.

We had the pleasure of hosting Isaiah during his 300 mile journey across Missouri! I got to walk 4 miles with him and get to know him and his story a bit. The four miles flew by, Isaiah is a great guy with a positive, kind spirit! Check out his story here:

We are OPEN!
I was on my way over to the Happy Apples Bicycle Bunkhouse to clean and get it opened for the season when I got a call, “This is Joe, do you have any beds available for tonight?”
I told him we weren’t open YET, but I was on my way to get it ready. He waited about 10 minutes for me to get there and kept me company while I cleaned and got the place ready for this year’s guests.
He noticed a Camino magnet on the door. He has also hiked the Camino de Santiago, so we had PLENTY to talk about!

Thank you to all the guests that stayed at the Happy Apples Bicycle Bunkhouse this year. We have the best guests and have loved hosting everyone. Our house is not insulated or heated and there really isn’t much Katy Trail through traffic this time of year anyway.

We have hosted our last guests of 2023, winterized the bunkhouse and are officially closed for the season. We look forward to hosting you all in 2024! We will open after the last chance of freezing temps, hopefully late April.

We love it when our friends go on vacation and come back with cool stickers for the bunkhouse bathroom walls. Thanks Tina & Denise! I‘m pretty sure we have the best bathroom on the Katy Trail with two toilet stalls, two shower stalls and about a million stickers!!

Peers Store is a wonderful place to stop on the Katy Trail, just 4 miles from the Happy Apples Bicycle Bunkhouse! They have water, Gatorade, ice cream and lots of other snacks and Katy Trail memorabilia and information.

The American Pilgrams on the Camino joined us on the Peers Porch this morning. The Camino is a Pilgrimage hike in Spain, this is the local St. Louis Chapter. They are hiking 8 miles today, Treloar to Marthasville, staying the night at the Happy Apples Bicycle Bunkhouse, then 12 miles tomorrow, Marthasville to Augusta. We are grateful they stopped in the Peers Store for cooling off and refreshments on this hot summer day. Join me in wishing them Happy Trails 🥾.

The Dutzow Deli is just 4 miles East of the Happy Apples Bicycle Bunkhouse and it is right on the Katy Trail. It’s the perfect place for through cyclists and hikers to stop for breakfast or lunch.

Weekend breakfast special: Southwestern omelet, fried potatoes and fresh fruit salad!!

I saw the cool Google Maps Street View Car when I was at Dollar General getting batteries for the bunkhouse locks.
I talked to the driver about getting the Happy Apples Bicycle Bunkhouse street name corrected on Google maps.
Unfortunately he wasn’t able to help. He said he’s just hired to “drive around” through a temp agency.
So make a note, we’re on South Three Street, not S Third Street. There’s a difference in Marthasville. Just find Philly's Pizza, we’re across S THREE Street from their back door.

I spent 40 days this spring walking the Camino de Santiago across Spain, sleeping in a different bunkhouse each night. On the Camino, bunkhouses are called albergues and you reserve a bed in a room with strangers from all over the world. It is magically special. I gathered information about what makes a good bunkhouse great.
The Happy Apples Bicycle Bunkhouse isn’t an albergue in Spain, it is on the Katy Trail in Marthasville, MO. You won’t be sleeping next to strangers, you’ll be in your own bedroom. But you might meet some people that will become lifelong friends in the common areas of the bunkhouse.

We’re working hard to get the Happy Apples Bicycle Bunkhouse back open after a long winter.
Cleaning, fixing leaks, hanging swings, planting grass seed, fixing gutters, putting the A/C units in, washing sheets, and my favorite: putting up the new stickers on the bathroom walls.
