Martin City Tourism & Recreation

Martin City Tourism & Recreation Our meetings are the 3rd Thursday of every month @ 5pm. Our office is at the Martin Fire Department. Martin was incorporated in 1920. So stop in and sit a spell.

Martin is a Floyd county town about seven miles south of Prestonsburg on Beaver Creek at the mouth of Bucks Branch. It was an early twentieth century coal mining town originally known as Bucks Branch, but the name Martin was in use by about 1915, for Martin Van Allen, the local postmaster. The Bucks Branch post office opened in 1910, was renamed Smalley in 1913 for Smalley Crisp, a landowner in th

e area, and finally named Martin in 1926. Since the founding of our small community Martin has endured its hard times. The main issue of our town has always been flooding. We are currently in the middle of a flood redevelopment project. With the help of Congressman Hal Rogers and the Army Corps of Engineers, we are transforming our city to make it an even greater place to visit and live. Our small city will rise once again. It won't happen overnight, but one day our town will shine bright once again. Stronger and better, a brighter future for our children. We welcome you to visit the City of Martin, Kentucky. We have several stores for shopping and some great restaurants to eat at too. We may not be a big city like Lexington or Louisville, but we are positive you will fall in love with our southern charm and hospitality. You’ll be glad you did…
