While this morning we had what is known by Kansans as a “gullywasher” (I assume all Kansans use this term because my mama does), the clouds lifted enough for me to do an on-site study of one portion of the bunkhouse that once housed Mexican railroad laborers and their families in Matfield Green, KS. I’m doing studies like this while I’m at the . Tonight after meeting the folks who renovated the bunkhouse I learned there are maybe five or so across the country still standing that you could even visit. A testament to the lack of visible monuments of these hard workers’ presence, and the vision of people willing to preserve history. A part of US history often unknown and overlooked. So grateful for the opportunity to be here, and I may have just been recruited to help get this on the national registry of historical places. I’m up for the challenge!

So great to have you here this week Kandace!

Posted • Hi! Checking in from my first full day at where I’ve been painting outside in-between some thundering rainstorms! I’m here through next Friday and while I’m certainly excited to learn more about the Tallgrass Prairie, I’m most eager to engage my artist explorations of home and belonging, and the interactions between public and private spaces. While I live in West Central Minnesota where the prairie, lakes, and hardwood forests meet, I was born in the Kansas Flint Hills. Like the Bluestem Prairie, my roots are deep here - my Mexican American family moved to Kansas to work the railroad, and the Tallgrass Artist Residency houses artists in residents in a renovated Mexican laborer bunkhouse. This history of Mexican migration to Kansas is a part of me, and I’m so eager to continue to learn more about how the prairie remembers the various peoples who have lived here. I’ll be posting about my experience the next 10 days. I’ll also have an artist talk next week about what I’ve learned about me and this place. I hope you’ll join me!
