We’re offering a unique hunting experience this fall at the Sandhill Wildlife Area in Babcock to help with a research study on deer density. Are you interested?

“The last time an archery hunt was held in Sandhill was 1968, so we are looking forward to offering this opportunity to archers this fall,” said Darren Ladwig, DNR Wildlife Biologist at Sandhill.

This hunt, which will be held on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, 2023, is open to all licensed archery hunters and is restricted to archery equipment, which includes crossbows and vertical bows. A limited number of applicants will be accepted, and the deadline to apply is Aug. 14.

The 9,150-acre Sandhill Wildlife Area was named for a series of gently rolling sandy ridges crisscrossing the property. It lies within the bed of ancient Glacial Lake Wisconsin, an expansive region of flat, marshy land interspersed with forests covering parts of seven counties in central Wisconsin. It’s a special place for this special hunt.

Watch out for wild parsnip!

Wild parsnip is an invasive plant found invading prairies, oak savannas, fens, roadsides, old fields and pastures throughout Wisconsin. This plant can also be found in open, disturbed areas in parks and green spaces. It's known for being a human health hazard.

That means don't touch it! When its sap contacts your skin in sunlight, it can cause severe rashes, blisters and skin discoloration.

To reduce your risk of encountering wild parsnip, learn to identify it. The leaves are yellow-green, coarsely toothed and compound (meaning multiple individual flowers are grouped together), with 3-5 leaflets. Small, yellow flowers are clustered together in a flat-topped array and are 3-8 inches across.

The Charming 'Farmhouse' in Mauston, Wisconsin
My extended family and I had an wonderful time at the Farmhouse. Upon entering, we were immediately impressed by the spacious and open layout. The open kitchen, dining room, and living room provided a perfect gathering space for our group of 19 people. The well-equipped kitchen made meal preparation a breeze, and the large dining table allowed us to enjoy our meals together. The garage, converted into a game room, entertained the tweens, teens and young adults with its pool table, air hockey, and foosball table. The picnic table in the garage provided additional seating for our meals. The extra refrigerator kept our beverages chilled. The fire pit and abundance of camp chairs allowed us to relax and bond over good conversation and s'mores. The basketball court provided fun and friendly competition for the teen boys. The two large washer/dryers made it easy to keep our clothes fresh throughout our stay. The home's central location allowed us to hike at both Mirror Lake State Park (25 miles away) and Devil's Lake State Park (39 miles away). Nearby Juneau County Castle Rock Park, just five miles from the house, offers a clean and expansive beach for $5 per car. For a local dining experience, we headed to The Way Station Saloon and Eatery a half mile from the house. The food was delicious and the prices were very reasonable. We recommend the Farmhouse for its comfortable accommodations and quiet surroundings.

So amazing!
Everything was clean, beautiful and plenty of towels and washcloths! Perfect location for privacy and plenty to entire kids. Our kids loved the pool table, chalk board, foosball and air hockey. Lots of room so we played a game of ball outside and then we all played bag boards! It was perfect

Check out how different swimsuit color’s affect visibility in the lake-river…. Especially for littles or if you don’t make them wear a life jacket. You can drown in 30 seconds… be safe this summer.

This Memorial Day Weekend is historically a big weekend to head to the lake. Even though the ducks won't let you ski in the lake next to headquarters, a whole bunch of you guys will be headed out of town towing your Bayliner (that you've had in storage for the last 9 months). Don't drink and boat. Wear your life vest. Remember that your swimsuit color makes a big difference between being seen underwater and being completely invisible. Make good choices.

Family vacation
Great location in the country, plenty of room for the kids to play games and run around inside and outside. Well kept house. We had a group of 19, felt right at home.
