"Canyons is unique in a multitude of ways. One that stands out in particular is the strong kayaking culture that has been a centerpiece of Canyons since its inception in 1985.

At Canyons, we cater to whitewater boaters of all types: those who kayak, canoe, row their own rafts, or even those who have no prior whitewater experience but are eager to hop in an inflatable kayak or on a stand-up paddle board!"

✨ Feel Her Energy ✨
On the river, it’s common to hear directions such as “Punch it!” “Smash it!” “Fight!” when someone describes the moves you should make. As a newbie Canyons guide, I remember something entirely different–Whizzy told me to run my hand through the river and “feel her energy”. There’s no ‘conquering’ a 60,000 cfs river – but you can dance with it. I like that.

Often, after a long day on the river, I walk down to the boats and look out across the water flowing by. Maybe it was a big, challenging day of whitewater, or maybe it was cold, windy, raining (or even snowing!) all day long. Every day is amazing, but not every day is easy. Regardless, it’s hard not to be overcome by feelings of gratitude and awe. How lucky are we that we get to work on, travel down, and temporarily LIVE next to a free-flowing river, in the heart of the largest Wilderness area in the lower 48 states? I’d say: pretty darn lucky.

Obligatory “Coffee Talk” post:

People often talk about the importance of “Community” - indeed, it is a major buzz-word. But if we just throw that word out there and expect it stick, we will fall short of building community every time. “Community” needs to be grown, nourished, and sustained - not just talked about - in order for it to exist. One way to build community is to establish and maintain traditions that allow community members to build trust, offer support, and communicate their feelings, wants, and needs (dare I say “guide-agendas”?) in a safe and open space.

At , one particular tradition that does exactly that is our daily coffee talk every morning before breakfast. Not every coffee talk looks or feels exactly the same, but purpose is constant: take a few minutes (or twenty) to enjoy and appreciate the wilderness that we are traveling through, remind ourselves to be fully in the present moment, check in with each other, make a game plan for the day, and - of course - caffeinate heavily (summer days in Idaho are LONG).

Here are a few pics from summer 2024 taken during that magic hour when the sun is just beginning to peak over the mountain ridges and into these beautiful canyons of the Middle Fork and Main Salmon Rivers that we are so fortunate to experience.

Happy December! My name is Nicky, and I’ll be taking over the socials for Canyons this summer. I hope everyone is settling in to their wintertime routines and traditions. (Meanwhile, I am down in Chile chasing whitewater and eternal summer….I’ll be sending you all warm vibes!)

People often ask me what I love about working at Canyons, and why it’s different from any company I’ve ever guided for in the past. The answer is simple: the people. Of course, the Middle Fork and Main Salmon Rivers are world-class stretches of wilderness whitewater, but what sets Canyons apart is the people who work there, or who we lovingly call our “Canyons Family.” Fun, talented, intelligent, loving, supportive, and hardworking folk with a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and unique talents that they share with each other, and the guests such as yourself who we are fortunate enough to share these rivers with. Here are a few of my favorite pics of some of my Canyons Fam from the last couple of summers.

Cheers!
