From the bus ride to the cafeteria and all stops in between, Discovery Learning Center high school students were given a tour of the SMCC campus by Ms. Karinlee Brister. She gave students insight of the college life. This will be very important when students actually attend college.

Wendy Smith, Ph.D., Workforce Training Director and Loran Gerald, Workforce Training Coordinator where guests speakers for the culmination of Career Week for the high school and junior high students at Discovery Learning Center.
Both ladies' presentations were about the courses that are offered for students who want to be gainfully employed without incurring debt and be employed in as little time as possible. This was truly beneficial for our students.

Lieutenant Kayla Moore, Sergeant Joey Roberts, Officer Valarie Eubanks, Officer Shannon Reagan, Steven Melton, and Officer Sasha spoke to the junior high and high school students about law enforcement careers. They also talked about the many benefits of becoming a law enforcement officer.
Officer Sasha and her handler, Steven Melton, with the Pike County Sheriff's Office demonstrated how Sasha is able to locate a hidden object. Melton spoke on how Sasha was trained and how she is used by the Sheriff's Office. Our younger students were also able to meet Sasha.

Samantha Jones, a veterinary technician, from Nunnery Veterinary Clinic was our guest speaker today for Career Week.
Mrs. Jones discussed the college in Mississippi that offer vet tech programs and how long it takes to become a categorized vet tech.
Other things that she mentioned were the different kind of jobs that are associated with a certified vet tech degree and places of employment of other than a vet clinic.
In her talk, Mrs. Jones told of all the responsibilities that vet tech have at vet clinics. They assist and prep animals for surgery, open the tool packages so that all the doctor has to do is perform the surgery and then the tech sutures the animal up and makes sure they wake up after surgery has been completed.

Dianne Wilkinson, nurse practitioner and nursing instructor at Southwest Mississippi Community College, was a guest speaker for the junior high and high school students for Career Week.
Mrs. Wilkinson's presentation was about how many and what kinds of courses are needed to take before enrolling in the nursing program. She explained about her experience as a nurse practitioner and the many different specialties as a nurse practitioner and the rewarding occupation it is.

Mrs. Elizabeth Ingram and Mrs. Christy Morris came and presented a program about writing resumes. After typing and printing their resumes, students were paired with another student and were asked to critique and make corrections. These are working resumes and can be updated in the future.
