Start 2025 off right with a First Day Hike! The Maryland Department of Natural Resources invites you to take part in a self-guided hike today!

At Deep Creek Lake State Park, join the 10 am ranger-led 1-mile hike will start at the Discovery Center and explore the day use area of the park. Or join the 1 pm "Healthy Parks, Healthy People First Day Hike", a 3-mile hike to Beckmans Trail. This trail goes up the mountain and passes the homestead and mine that are in the park. This trail is not difficult but be prepared for possible winter weather.

At Herrington Manor State Park, rangers lead a three-mile hike around Herrington Manor Lake using State Park and Forest trails. Park entrance fee of $3/MD vehicle or $5/out of state vehicle.

At New Germany State Park, join Ranger Noah for an easy to moderate 1.5-mile "Little Legs First Day Hike" on the Ice House Loop to kickoff 2025! Afterwards, warm up by the fire and enjoy complimentary coffee and hot chocolate in the Lake House. The hike will start at 10 a.m. at the Lake House. This hike is not stroller friendly.

Join Ranger Noah for a second First Day hike at New Germany: a moderate to difficult 4 mile hike through New Germany State Park. The hike will start at 2:00 pm at the Lake House. Afterwards, warm up by the fire and enjoy complimentary coffee and hot chocolate in the Lake House. This hike is not stroller friendly.

At Swallow Falls State Park, meet at the Swallow Falls Trail Entrance for a ranger-led 1.25 mile trail hike through the old growth eastern hemlock and white pine forest and admire the beautiful waterfalls! Entrance fee is per vehicle at $3/MD resident and $5/out of state resident.

Registration is not required for any of these hikes. Leashed pets are welcome on some of these trails. Some hikes are not stroller accessible, please see dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/pages/firstdayhikes.aspx for more details.

Celebrate New Year’s Eve at one of these special events in Garrett County! The Deer Park Inn hosts a special gourmet New Year's Eve menu tonight; call 301.334.2308 for reservations & view the menu at https://shorturl.at/Zc4NW. Wisp Resort hosts a free New Year's Eve Concert with Rick K. Roadtrip in the Lodge from 8 pm - 12 am with activities for kids and families. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Honi Honi Bar hosts their New Year's Eve with live music by The Warped Band at 8:30 pm. Pawn Run Bar + Kitchen hosts a New Year's Eve Party from 4 pm - midnight with live music by Jason Shaw, festive libations and culinary bites. Watch CHIPS Network, Inc's the Joy of Christmas Light Show, a one-hour show featuring over 38,000 individually controlled lights, running at the top of the hour from 5 pm-10 pm. The show can be viewed from your vehicle by tuning to 87.9 FM or by using the free PulseMesh app. You can also watch from outside and enjoy the interactive dance floor and light-up sofas. On New Year's Eve beginning at 7 pm, Our Town Theatre will have food, cash bar, door prizes, and a reveal of the new season with sneak peeks from upcoming shows! Seating is limited, tickets are $40/each and can be purchased at ourtowntheatre.org/tickets.

It's your last chance to see Joy of Christmas Light Show nightly at 5 pm - 10 pm now only thru January 1, 2025 at the Oakland Community Center, located at 14 North 8th Street. It's a one-hour show with over 38,000 lights set to music. This year’s theme, “Big News,” involves the adventures of Ray Porter and his trusty companion, Digger, who are striving to become the best news reporters in the area. The show can be viewed from your vehicle by tuning to 87.9 FM or by using the free PulseMesh app. You can also watch from outside and enjoy the interactive dance floor and light-up sofas. The show is created and produced from scratch by staff of The CHIPS Network in Oakland and is sponsored by several area businesses, individuals, and organizations.
