Guide season is underway for the Red Sled. Conditions are not fantastic but anglers are seeing 30-35 bass each with some in great size.

3 days in and four measured 20-21.25”, six 19-19.75” and a bunch of others deep into the 18’s. As for weight, we missed 5lbs on the 21.25” bass by just a 10th.

Sometimes dirty water is just what we need.

Great week on the wayer catching up with 4 of the 6 Reel River Guides before my season breaks loose.

Fun starting my week with Glenn and my first C-Class and a few 19’s. Then Hitting 3 rivers in 3 days with Carl and the Mike K. Joined Mark in his new AlumaRyder and traded a day with him East and West, and soon on my way up North to fish with Curt on what will be my 4th River this week alone.

Yes 600+ miles of driving/towning early mornings and late evenings limited sleep for days in the bright sun and the first set Racconn Eyes of 2025 was all worth it.

Season 3 of my River Fishing column is underway. I have a great line up and am always looking for ideas on what topics River Anglers are interested in. While I “lean” smallmouth and walleye, catfish and other species are certainly possible with the right push.

Ok I’ll join in. Yes the FH ramp is ice jammed with several feet of ice. But it will be clear in a few days. Wont take much.

Besides, many of the up river ramps have been open for over a week. 😉

Over the years I’ve spent a lot time on the water with Jeff. We spent time fishing, paddling, jetting and chasing smallmouth on the Delaware, Juniata and Susquehanna rivers. Collaborating and shooting video and stills for magazine, podcast and even DVD content.

Oddly we spent more time on the water when our vocations were not in the outdoor, fishing & boating arenas.

Crazy how busy life can get!

Today’s Vintage Kayak Fishing photo is of an article written by Chris Gorsuch in the November-December 2004 issue of Pennsylvania Angler & Boater Magazine. Chris encouraged and facilitated much of my early writing and photography. I had already been featured in Bassmaster Magazine (Sept/Oct 2002) at that point, and was submitting photos to various local magazines like Woods & Waters. I’ll post some of those cover shots later, but in the early 2000’s, there was no Facebook, Instagram or YouTube. There were magazines in wire racks besides the door at tackle shops. This particular magazine, published by Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission was subscription based. Chris introduced me to the editor and it was the first time I got paid for photos and stories. It was an effective way to grow the sport of kayak fishing. Thanks Chris!

Most of our area rivers and lakes are froze shut. Use this time to have a PM Services done on the equipment we use and certainly could not do without without.

This is the perfect time to focus on preventative maintenance.

My trolling motor is the one piece of equipment that cannot be in peak shape. Deployed 7-8hrs a day, 5-7 days a week, 9 months a year is grueling enough. Add the shallow rocky river that is my office, and the punishment this vital piece takes is amazing.
