We all know that today 90 years ago, Elvis came into this world and shook into our hearts. But, many don’t know that he shares his birthday with another Memphis artist; Luther Perkins. Luther and Elvis lived in the same housing project, Lauderdale Courts! But, Luther would go on to play with Johnny Cash and have his own style of guitar play that was later called “boom-chicka-boom”. As we honor the King today, let us not forget the many other trailblazers of modern music. ❤️

The Story of Cecil:

“The song “Soul Man,” written by David Porter and Isaac Hayes, transports me back to the bedside of my dying wife, Linda, as she sang it to the top of her lungs while I played and sang. Our friend, Nancy Apple, captured it on video. When I saw Mr. David Porter at Stax giving a tour the other day to a group of young folks, my mind was transported back to that death-bed scene. But this time, the memory was filled with gratitude. Gratitude for experiencing a great love. Gratitude for having the ability to grieve to the fullest and recognize the great life I had and the one I continue to live. Gratitude for being a better “Soul Man” today than I was yesterday through God’s grace. I told the story about what the song meant to me to Mr. David Porter and he put his hand over his heart, smiled and thanked me for telling him. He also signed a Stax t-shirt for me: “Soul Man” David Porter.
Thank you, Mr. Porter. Y’all come see us on the Backbeat Tour buses. You never know who you might see on these magical, musical streets of Memphis, Tennessee!”
