As Kwanzaa concludes, let’s reflect on Imani (Faith) in our community’s strength and future.
Mason Temple served as a focal point of civil rights activities in Memphis during the 1950s and 1960s. Mason Temple was built between 1940 and 1945 as the administrative and spiritual center of the Church of God in Christ, the second largest black denomination.
Most notably, the Mason Temple is known as the site of Martin Luther King’s final speech “ I’ve been to the mountaintop” delivered in support of the Memphis sanitation workers.
Join us on a tour of possibilities to learn more about Mason Temple and other historic sites that shape Memphis’ history and future.

Let’s celebrate Kwanzaa’s principle of Nia (Purpose) by honoring Memphis’ own influential organization, the Ernest Withers Collection 💥
Dr. Ernest Withers, Sr. a native Memphian, is an internationally acclaimed photographer recognized for his iconic photographs in Memphis and the broader south during the Civil Rights era.
Today the art gallery preserves the greatness of civil rights leaders and blues legends in our Bluff City. Ernest Withers Collection offers programmatic offerings that focus on engaging guests with the present and past and fostering opportunities for connection and growth. #Nia #Purpose #Memphis #africanamericanheritage

Did you know one of the original black Meccas is right here in Memphis? Long before Tulsa, Atlanta, or Harlem, there was the Mound.
Orange Mound is home to one of the oldest African-American communities in the country, and one of the first places African-Americans were permitted to thrive economically.
By the 1970s, Orange Mound had one of the largest black populations in the country, where Black people owned their homes, built their own schools, churches, and owned businesses.

Today, in the spirit of Kwanzaa, we uplift ‘Ujima’—collective work and responsibility. This principle guides us as we foster community development and celebrate our shared progress in Memphis.
Organizations like Knowledge Quest serve the community by stabilizing homes, providing access to health, and making clear path and opportunities for families .
