Health and Wellness Coaching is a partnership in making desired changes in your life. The changes could be motivated by health conditions; the need to lose weight, engage in regular exercise or stop smoking, for example. Or the motivation could simply be the desire for a more balanced life. The coaching process is deeply supportive in implementing change. Together we will explore your values and work to align your desired goals with those values, which helps reduce long held ambivalence to the changes you want to make. Coach/Client relationship

Mindfulness

Mindfulness practice is paying attention on purpose to what is here without judgment. These 60 minute classes teach a 3 point skill for detaching from monkey mind and relaxing the body. Our bodies stay "on duty" due to the mind organizing the multitude of responsibilities our lives entail. We tighten up. The result is what I call "invisible holding." This is what creates chronic neck and back pain and other body ailments. If your life and body feel full of stress these classes are the tools for creating balance in your life and body. Cutting edge laboratory research is beginning to reveal some of the biological pathways through which mindfulness training may positively impact physical health and the healing processes. For example, the MBSR study by Davidson and colleagues showed that individuals who had the largest shifts in brain activity associated with positive emotional experiences also had the strongest antibody responses to a flu vaccine. That study was the fist to show that mindfulness training can change the brain, and theta brain changes were directly associated with a change in the immune system, which is designed to protect the brain against disease. Other studies have documented lower levels of stress hormones (cortisol) and pro-inflammatory molecules (cytokines) following MBSR in people with serious medical conditions, including breast cancer, prostate cancer, and other types of cancer. Finally, research has consistently shown that mindfulness training effectively reduces symptoms of stress negative mode states, and increases emotional wellbeing and quality of life, among persons with a variety of chronic medical conditions. ~DUKE INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE
