Jerome is a ghost city with a ghost suburb. One of Arizona’s true hidden gems clings to a mountain overlooking the Verde Valley, just a mile from downtown Jerome. Gold King Mine and Ghost Town harbors an assortment of ramshackle buildings, a menagerie of friendly animals and a sprawling collection of rusted machinery that forever teeters between ruin and redemption. Occupying the former town site of Haynes, it’s a place that can entertain the whole family for hours. Pan for gold, feed the goats, roam among the metal bones, or just sit and enjoy the views. There’s so much history to explore. Gearheads and photographers will have to be dragged to the exits. So next time you’re visiting Jerome, take a little detour down the road beside the fire station to Gold King Mine. If you’d like to read more, here’s a story that I wrote for the Arizona Republic. Today marks the official beginning of Arizona’s monsoon season. For the next three months we will scan the skies daily hoping to see dark clouds climbing above a distant horizon to waft our way. We’ll listen for faint rumblings of thunder. And we’ll sniff the air like bloodhounds. Often that’s the first indication you have to take a particular storm seriously, if the scent of moisture hangs on the breeze. It’s not the full-bodied aroma of a hard rain, not the petrichor desert dwellers all know and love. It hasn’t fermented yet. Before anything is unleashed, there is only a whisper of fragrance, a river too distant to see. Teardrops not yet spilled. But how exciting just to sense it. “Do you smell that?” I’ll ask Michele. “Can you smell it? Smells like rain.” What I really mean is that it smells like hope. Because in arid lands, rain means better times ahead. Rain means easier living, less worry for plants, animals, and people alike. Rain means contentment. Rain means joy. Rain means life. Predictions for this year’s monsoon season are not promising. But then I remember most experts also predicted a dry winter, and we all know how that turned out. So I’ll keep watching, listening, and sniffing. And I’ll keep my dancing shoes handy because when that first big storm crashes down around me, I plan to be out in it, kicking up my heels and grinning wide. Gather ye monsoons! Bring on the rain!

The desert's ability to create life and beauty in hot temperatures, dry conditions, and prickly spaces never fails to amaze! Did you know the Saguaro bloom, Arizona's state flower, opens only at night being pollinated primarily by bats?

Be prepared for flash flooding and rockfall activity when visiting Grand Canyon in the next few weeks/next month!

Increased precipitation and seasonal snow melt-off may lead to enhanced flood risk along creek drainages in the inner canyon.

Backpackers and hikers should be especially aware of elevated flow in rivers, creeks, washes, and low water crossings. Particularly, low water crossings may become impassable due to flooding or flood damage.

As melt-off continues over the coming weeks and months, expect greater frequency of localized rockfalls in the inner canyon, especially on northern slopes.

For a more comprehensive list of backcountry trail updates, visit the park website https://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/trail-closures.htm

You don't see this every day! The vegetation at Catalina State Park was decorated with delicate frost yesterday while towering saguaros stood in stark, green contrast. ❄️🌵
