The outdoor shower was one of the first projects we did when we bought our place. A beach house doesn’t feel like a beach house without an outdoor shower. When using it, please remember to latch & lock the door behind you. Otherwise, it swings open & close in the wind, warping the hinges making it harder to latch & lock each time thereafter. Thanks so much. 🙂

Before heading out of town Sunday, we stopped by the Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center in Port St. Joe. We learned lots of cool stuff about sea turtles & got to see some turtles & tortoises they keep on site. Unfortunately, due to space constraints, they do not have any sea turtles, but they do have volunteers who are more than knowledgeable about them. This would be a great way to pass some time on a stormy day.

The first photo is when we bought our home in 2015 & how it remained until the early morning of October 10, 2018.
The 2nd photo is what it looked like when we arrived a few days after the storm. Quite a difference, right?!
But what’s more remarkable is the first photo compared to how our home looks now. Unrecognizable. And in a very good way. 5 years later and better than ever.

I know Mexico Beach doesn’t have a lifeguard or a flag system (although I do think they should at least have this), it’s a part of Bay Co & I wanted to share for our guests since I’ve been hearing so much about these scary rip currents lately. Be safe out there!

Reusing the Bay County sheriff’s photo. While you won’t be able to see the rip like this from the shore, there are things you can spot.

*Edit* this post was created during a dangerous rip current event when people ignored the water being closed to swimmers. Most of the time the beach will not look like this however, rips are just a way of water. Below is supposed to be information you can use while standing on the beach.

SPOTTING A RIP CURRENT
1. The U in the sand (red line on the beach). This U happens from sand being displaced due to the onshore flow of the water. The rip is usually on the downwind side of the U but can be perfectly straight out. That typically happens when the wind is directly onshore.

2. Look for deeper water. Note where the rips are typically deeper and the color of the water is darker. (Red Line pointed out)

3. Look for surf. Where the waves are breaking, the water is likely coming in or fighting the water that is coming out. This is usually where the shallower water is. (Yellow Lines)

4. Stand still and watch the water for 30 seconds. If you can visualize the water moving out and it lines up with a u in the sand, plus there isn’t any surf and the water is deeper than the surrounding water; you are likely looking at a rip. This water is not safe to get in even if you are an Olympic swimmer….

SURVIVAL OF A RIP IF CAUGHT
1. Don’t panic
2. Don’t panic
3. Don’t panic

4. Float as best you can, face the shore, and wave your arms for help.

5. Note the green arrows. You can escape a rip by swimming parallel to the shore in either direction (Green Lines). There are several getting-out points where you can get back to shore if you follow the surf (yellow lines back in).

6. Continue to not panic. If you can not escape the pull of the rip by swimming parallel to the shoreline… Let the rip take you out. When you feel you are no longer being pulled out, swim parallel and follow waves that are moving to the shore to get out safely. This is a lot of floating as rips can pull you out fairly quickly. Highlighting the importance of having a float with you if you plan on wading past waist deep.

SEEING SOMEONE IN A RIP
1. Call 911 and tell them what access you are at.
2. Try to get a nearby surfer/jet ski/boater's attention that someone needs help.
3. From the shore, shout directions of what way the person caught in the rip needs to swim to get out of the rip.

NEVER GET IN THE WATER TO HELP. WAIT FOR EMERGENCY RESPONDERS TO ARRIVE.

Soon it will be summer. Time for long, lazy days, bubbles, frozen sticky popsicles & ice cream, fireflies & fireworks, spending the day beside a body of water fishing, splashing, swimming or boating, weekend spent grilling with friends & family, picnics in the grass, late sunsets, lazy days reading & much more. Message me to book your stay. You can do all of these things & more here.

Sometimes when people find out we have a place in Mexico Beach they are surprised to hear that I drive all the way to Mexico (& alone on occasion with our daughter!) to spend time there.
I chuckle & tell them it’s not IN Mexico, it’s in Florida.
This sunset however, was taken in Mexico. Cabo San Lucas to be exact, just a few weeks ago while on a cruise. Mexico Beach, like Mexico has great sunsets & amazing fish/shrimp tacos. And you can drive to Peppers in PSJ for your margarita fix!
It’s Mexico on a budget.

Dates are starting to fill up for the 2023 season. Message me to book. Happy weekend to all.

New year, new golf cart.
Actually, this is the same golf cart as before, just a new look. This was a case of one thing (rusted bed) lead to another (new wooden bed), and another (paint job), etc…
We hope you enjoy.

You can now message me for booking your stay in 2023.

So excited to have new bedspreads & new-to-us furniture in the guest rooms. These mid-century pieces were my Grandmother’s & I am so happy to have it here & serve a purpose. I’m considering painting it, but for now it will stay as is.
Also, I am pleased to report all of the fish tackle from the back guest room is now happily stored in one of the dressers making it less of an eyesore & more of a kid-friendly room.

Thank you to all who have helped us or the town of MB, rented from us, told your friends about our beach town or home & sent caring words during difficult times.
Thank you for the encouragement & push to make our home better for many to enjoy.

Happy Fall Y’all! The fall & winter is our favorite time to be at the beach. Less heat, humidity & bugs are a huge plus for us. Another huge difference is the sun sets out over the water versus over the trees during this time. You can still swim well in to October & sometimes even November. Message me for booking.

Did you know we have a guest book where you can leave us a short note?
We love returning to our place & reading these sweet messages. ☺️

Also, This polka dotted 3-ring binder has the same information I email to you prior to your stay, plus lots of additional information like menus, things to do or places to go, etc.

Please check both out during your visit.

If you’re like me, you hang nearly half of your family’s clothes to dry. This white hanging rack is quite handy for that. It folds in half to store. To use, just open up, then tighten each k**b & hang your shirts, swimsuits, undergarments, etc. There is also a bigger, wooden rack beside the washer that collapses as well.

Also, beach towels, blankets, towel clips, puddle jumpers, etc are on the hearth in these baskets. We’ve acquired quite a few kiddie towels, too. Whatever beach stuff our kid outgrows just gets retired to the beach house for our guests to use.

We added a few easy to use chairs (in the blue bags) on the back porch. Our beach cart is on the back porch too along with umbrellas, random beach toys, etc. If you are looking for something in particular, please let me know. It’s hard to know what exactly is still there between guests as stuff breaks, gets swept out to sea, just randomly disappears or gets out in odd places, but I can try to help point you in the right direction.

Thanks to all our guests!

I found a diamond earring in the air vent in the laundry room. I’m not sure if it’s real or not, but I’m assuming not, since I would think of it was real someone would have contacted me about it. However, if anyone still has the other one & would like this one back, please let me know.

Digging holes this size on the beach is prohibited and a fineable offense. You cannot leave these holes as Sea Turtles, people and beach patrol vehicles will get stuck in them.

This hole took one of our firefighters 30 minutes to fill it back in. Please be respectful of our beach!

New screen door alert! Now you can get a wonderful early morning or late evening cross-breeze through the house without the bugs.

Last year, Mother Nature decided we didn’t need a screen/storm door so she removed it with her breath 🌬. However, the husband thinks otherwise. So today, a better quality one was installed. Please cross all your fingers that this one stays put throughout the seemingly never ending windy season.

Also, all bedrooms now officially have blackout curtains so you or your kids can sleep in a little later (hopefully) while you are on vacation at our house. The curtains that were in the front bedroom turned out to be poser blackout curtains, but the new ones are legit.

02/10/2022

If you are wanting to stay at our place this summer, you better contact me because July is full & June is close to being that way. I have openings in early May & all of August is open if you are a non traditional schooler or can work from any home.
