Have fun but fill those holes in when you leave please 🐢❤️
It's Memorial Day Weekend, and our beaches are packed for the unofficial start to the summer.
But here's your annual reminder that we aren't the only ones hitting the beach this summer..so are some of our favorite seasonal visitors: nesting sea turtles and shorebirds. Here are a few easy reminders to help share the beach and be a good friend to wildlife:
Lights OUT - turn off beach-facing lights on homes and businesses by the beach. Walk with turtle-friendly red LED light, or better yet, by the light of the moon!
Stay on the wet sand beach and away from roped off nesting areas or dry sand where shorebirds and sea turtles nest.
Leave no trace! Take your gear (tents and chairs, too!) home with you at night, fill in large holes, and level sandcastles. (Pictured: what NOT to leave behind on the beach)
Keep dogs on a leash and never allow your dog to chase birds or turtles. Even the friendliest pup can chase and injure shorebirds and turtles.
If you're ever lucky enough to encounter a nesting sea turtle, please stay back and watch from a safe, quiet, and dark distance.
