We are *extra special* thankful this year - Happy Thanksgiving FROM Seagreen Cottage! 💚

We moved in this weekend 🙌🏼 and I’ve never been so happy to clean, organize, and unpack [especially all the things I’ve been collecting over the last year]. We had a lot of help from our family, who we are also VERY thankful for!

James worked SO hard over the last few weeks to bring everything together and meet our Thanksgiving Break move-in goal. It all happened so quickly that I didn’t even post updates! I couldn’t be any more proud of this gorgeous house, or any more thankful for all that he does for us everyday. 💓

We have some bunk beds to build and a long punch list, but WE’RE HERE at the fun part: furnishing and decorating! Not many spaces are “show-ready” - these are some sneak-peeks of finished corners and I’ll share more soon!

Life took a busy turn but things are still progressing at Seagreen Cottage!

Someone {🙋🏻‍♀️} decided to return to work teaching 6th Grade Science, so let’s just say our family is trying to find a new normal. Add a side of football season with 3 kids at 3 different levels, and a new puppy, and there’s been scarce “free time” to work at or visit the house. I sure miss the island 😭

We did have our gorgeous cabinets installed, and the juniper shiplap is complete around the house! Mr. Taunton is working hard on finishing shiplap when he can, with interior doors and trim coming up next.

We have big dreams of spending Thanksgiving break on the island and moving in that week, pending no more hurricane close-calls or unforeseen slow-downs. Wish us luck! 🫣

just everything we’ve been dreaming of: first morning waking up at our own spot on the island [in a camper under the unfinished house for now], waiting in line for THE donuts, walks on the bay with dolphins, golf cart rides to the beach, and a beautifully slooooow day.

Summer is rolling along and I’ve slacked on updates, but here’s the latest news:
📰 The Airstream project is dead for now 😔 we found some damage and decided it should be gutted for a fresh (and better smelling) start. So it isn’t usable for us this summer like we planned. Maybe we would circle back to the renovation, but right now it’s for sale. Anyone interested in a ready-to-remodel Airstream with A/C? The worst part is done for you! 😷
📰 Appliances are in…but in storage since we’re not ready for them. I am so excited about that pretty refrigerator 🤍
📰 We have all sheetrock & texture and she is feeling like a house inside 🙌🏼
📰 AC is on HALLELUJAH
📰 Our timeline has been extended so our summer plans have pivoted to a campsite under the house, but camping at the beach is still a good time on SGI! ☀️
📰 Tile work is on-deck, so pretty interior progress is coming soon ✨

New playground at the lighthouse, shaved ice, a quick beach walk - we cannot WAIT to spend more than just an afternoon here (when we have A/C & toilets 🫠)

We drove out to check on the guys, who worked LATE the last 2 days to finish the ceiling under the house (under the house is parking but also some fun outdoor space). AND the sheet rock crew was on-site so now WE HAVE WALLS (this was just my sneak peek of the entry, but I’ll share more next week)!

Happy Mother’s Day! Wishing all you mommas a relaxing day when you don’t lift a finger and lay by a pool (my plans). My fam surprised me with this flamingo lamp that I was swooning over last weekend 🥹 I’m obsessed with her and deciding on a name because she’s our new mascot 🤭🦩

Yesterday we worked at the house and saw the pretty paint (final round of paint is still to come). I walked through to decide where we’ll add shiplap, our juniper shiplap, or sheet rock. And then we saw the prettiest pink SGI sunset driving home 🌅

took out every single smelly fabric (including the custom curtains that I’ll clean & reuse because they’re cuuute!); a bit of demo; scrubbing walls and ceilings; and just otherwise seeing what we got ourselves into 😂😵‍💫🥴

Testing exterior paint (on the side of our newly enclosed barn at home lol) & pulling together some interior choices so I could make a final decision on the cabinet colors - going with Natural Linen by Sherwin Williams. Also met with our cabinet maker and got all those details finalized so things are rolling!

BUT, just look at her! We’ve casually looked at & shopped for a vintage Airstream for years. Yesterday, James found this deal on a 1971 in working order and we jumped in the truck to go scoop it up! Spontaneity at its finest 🚐

We need a camper on-site at Seagreen Cottage so we’ll use this beauty (after a good cleaning & maintenance) as base camp while we do the finish work on the house.

Won’t she look cute parked underneath?! I love her vintage vibes so I see us restoring rather than ripping everything out… when the house is done, of course! [imagine all the fun ideas I’m having]

it’s been a minute since I’ve posted an update but things ARE moving along at , even though life & our kids’ sports & activities have kept us BUSY this spring! The rough-ins for both electrical & plumbing are done, the pretty siding is almost finished, and appliances & custom cabinetry are ordered! Hope to spam you with more progress soon 🥳

I love to collect mason jars and found glass containers, and I’m always finding uses for my stash. I bought these pretty roses & then used burlap and ribbons to make some sweet DIY Valentine’s Day gift bouquets 💐 Repurposing at its prettiest!

Feeling the pressure of nailing down exterior color choices and finishes… I want to do these doors justice, and for the whole place to be tasteful but memorable. You know I’m thinking of some sea greens and some Old Florida vibes, but there are SO many pretty colors to choose from!

I got to climb up to the tower today, and it’s even better than I hoped it would be! 🥹

The Tower Room will sleep 2 guests [daybed and trundle], and double as a room to enjoy the panoramic view, read a good book, play a game of chess, and it may also have a small desk. We’ve already been collecting pieces because we have some fun ideas to give this room a real Old Florida naturalist vibe 🐚🌾🪶

On this 1st day of 2023 we drove out to SGI, went up the new stairs into Seagreen Cottage [❣️], and then put our son’s new paddle board & my kayak in the water right at the end of our street! We could hear the roaring ocean waves from the Gulf side [yes, you can hear the waves at our place!] and had so much fun! We just paddled around the launch and nearby docks but we have big plans to go out often and explore further. I know our guests will just love going out on the bay from right here, too! 🛶

James has been driving out to the island at daybreak the last few days [👏🏼 let’s hear it for my hard working husband-contractor] to get materials to the framing crew. He sent me these pics this morning… including the first-ever view INSIDE 🥹

What was once only a dream on paper is now taking a real place in our life. It’s so magical… I really can’t even put it into the right words. I’m feeling deeply grateful. We’ve plotted and planned and dreamed of a home at the beach for years [including several “almosts” that didn’t work out] so this has been a long time in the making. We designed this home together and James spent hours of his “spare” time at our kitchen table drawing these plans. We’ve put love and thought into every corner, including things that will work best for our family but also for the guests we’ll host and share it with. Seagreen Cottage will be such a special place, I can already feel it. And I’ve got big plans for her 💚

Seagreen Cottage is coming off the ground! Talk about an exciting gift that just keeps getting better 🎁🫶🏼💚 The pilings and concrete are complete [and those 10 months of planning and prep that came before] so now the framing can begin. This stage is like waiting to meet a new person… I’m so ready to see her come to life!

Winter is coming... to Florida! With temperatures dropping, there is an increased possibility that you may see a cold-stunned sea turtle or cold stressed manatee while you're out and about this Christmas weekend. This will be especially possible in shallow bay and estuary systems, where the water temperatures can drop much lower than the Gulf of Mexico itself. If you do encounter a stressed or injured sea turtle or marine mammal, please do not push the animal back into the water, and remember to contact the proper response organizations!

You can contact FWC's wildlife alert hotline by dialing or *FWC on your cell phone, or by calling 1-888-404-3922. They will direct your information to the closest local response group. Thank you for your help and support!

Laundry Room Remodel Reveal

Start to finish, this took us about 3 months [while living in it and using our “spare” time 🙃] - we gutted it down to the drywall, removed a door/wall, got new tile, added a barn door, changed the layout with custom cabinets, and added a whole bunch of shiplap and new trim. Then there was the endless painting! This was our last big project at home before we focus on

Our property is on this end and over on the Bay side, but the beach isn’t far from anyone on the island! The bay at the end of our street has a perfect access point to slip in our kayaks and paddleboards, and the beach entrance is just an easy 5-7 minute walk or a short golf cart ride. Such a paradise that we can’t wait to spend more time exploring 🌊🏖️🥹

The thing about dreams is… they change 🤍

I opened this retail shop as my first business venture away from teaching [and I shared the building with my husband’s business, James Taunton Construction]. It was never in my plans but I’m so thankful it happened. We’re proud of what we did with the building and my business, but I’ve outgrown it in many ways. My real loves are design, painting furniture, and picking for salvaged goods - all of which I’m not able to do much while running a retail store [and don’t forget family life with 3 kids and a bunch of animals].

All of that to say - our next chapter combines all of my loves and is being built right now on St. George Island - Seagreen Cottage 💚 [pics of our plans and the day we rented a lift to check out our bay view]. I can’t wait to really dig into this project and flex my design muscles! SGI is one of our family’s favorite places and it’s the perfect getaway for us at just 1 hour from home. It will also be the perfect place to share with others - Seagreen Cottage will be a beautiful & unique vacation rental property in the near future! This project is a dream of ours and will be my focus, along with helping James with his business and custom design-builds [as was the original plan when I left teaching 🫣].

I’ll be painting loads of furniture for this home and we’ll be doing much of the work ourselves. The whole journey will be shared here so I hope you’ll follow along! I’d like to focus my business more on design in the future, but rather than make detailed plans that God will just throw off his desk 🚮🗑️ I’m going to enjoy this process and wait to see how the future unfolds.

And look at our cute glass bottles for detergent & fabric softeners ✨ I can’t have basic detergent containers sitting around in this pretty room now can I 😂 these are from Amazon - they’re light enough to pick-up and pump directly into the machine dispensers, or pump into the measuring cups. A pretty upgrade that is super functional… that’s what this room is all about!
