Top of the World is at Sea Level. Just few miles away from the busy touristy Miami Beach there's a hidden oasis, almost no people on a regular day, palms rising from white sand. If you aren't local, you probably don't know about it.

It’s a boat, about to run you over and hit the ocean. Super tall central signage is a bow of a ship, with railings on each side. Punctuated cantilevers look like radiator grills. Architect was an engineer before and it reflects in his designs. He also designed Balfour Hotel and Plymouth Hotel.

One of the early Art Deco buildings on Ocean Drive. 1935, architect H. Hohauser. Upside down T signage resembles the movie theater of the time. You can just feel the optimism radiating through design, at the time when life was grim during the Depression. They were designing a fantasy world allowing travelers to escape misery up north. Hence the architecture of joy, built with use experience in mind. It’s a resort in tropics where people come to relax and have a good time, and the urban utopian tropical ambience, will encourage people to do what they came here to do. Small scale neighborhood is what makes it walkers paradise.

Restaurant downstairs is called Montana’s - homage to Scarface (1983) movie, interior fully furnished in the spirit of the movie, with its gaudy excessive early 80s visual style.

The Auto Wash Bowl in Chicago circa 1920’s
The nearly 80-foot-wide, ridged concrete bowl was about 16 inches at its deepest point in the centre. Customers paid 25 cents to an attendant who strapped a protective rubber cover over the radiator. Patrons would then enter the bowl via a ramp and drive their cars around and around the bowl at a speed of about 10 miles per hour. The ridges in the concrete would vibrate the car and the water, creating a sloshing action that helped wash away all the mud from the chassis and wheels.

The process took about three or four minutes. The car would then exit the bowl. Patrons who wanted a complete car wash could enter one of the bays where the rest of the car would be cleaned. On a busy Saturday, about 75 cars per hour would go for a spin in the wash bowl.

Art should be intertwined with everyday life. Creative expression should never be limited to museum, gallery, or poetry book. Art should have the ability to inspire on a daily basis, in unique and powerful ways. Sahara Motel - the last of the Mohicans. They cannot touch it for next 5 years.

Sunny Isle Beach is a perfect example of what happens when city sells out to developers like a b*tch. What used to be small scale motel row is now a bunch of shadow casting skyscrapers.

Glass Block

Invented in the early 1920s it instantly became one of Art Deco hallmarks. It’s hollow inside, and doesn’t have load bearing capabilities. It was often used with neon light behind it, creating a beautiful collage after dark. It made a comeback in the 80s. And it’s coming back again. And, perhaps, it never really went away.

Even waiting rooms at the airport in Miami look epic.

Current lifeguard stands were introduced after 2013 hurricane, when old ones got damaged and eventually were auctioned off (one of them ended up on the beach in NJ). New ones cost city $88k each, there are 6 different color themes, and 6 different shapes. There’s a total of 38 towers along 8 miles of beach. There are 150 lifeguards working for Miami Beach from over 20 countries, they are all EMT and Paramedics. Lifeguarding in Miami Beach started in 1926. Surf lifesaving originated on Bondi Beach, Australia in 1907 in response to drownings at local beaches in Sydney.

The Majestic on Ocean Drive was named after the radio manufacturer called “Majestic”. You could say it was a copyright infringement, just like other Miami Beach hotels stealing names from NY (Tiffany, Carlyle, etc). The design was also inspired by a specific radio model by Majestic, called tombstone. Another example of industrial design influencing Art Deco architecture in Miami Beach. My family once stayed here.

At the height of Miami Vice fame in the 80s Don Johnson was invited to Oprah Winfrey's show. Instead of saying "No", he sent her a pair of his Ray-Ban sunglasses. Several years after show ended, he finally appeared on the show and that made a good opener to the interview. Don Johnson was known to be "quite a diva" back in the peak of his fame.

Say what you want, but without DJ Miami Vice would have never become the show that helped to change Miami, and we are still talking about to this day.

Versace Mansion (Casa Casuarina)

Twenty years ago, South Beach, Florida was not a place that catered to early risers. It was a beach-cavorting, nightclub-dancing, hedonistic scene ruled by a fashion crowd of models, musicians, actors, and bohemians—so long as said bohemian looked good on Rollerblades wearing a G-string. But within this indolent world there were driven, ambitious people, and none more so than the unofficial mayor of South Beach himself: designer Gianni Versace. On the morning of July 15, 1997, the 50-year-old Italian founder of a glamorous fashion empire was up by 6 a.m. He made calls to Milan, did some more work, then slipped out of his mansion and headed to News Café, just three blocks from his home.

A regular at the buzzy Ocean Drive restaurant, Versace bought a coffee, exchanged greetings with the manager, scooped up issues of Vogue and The New Yorker, and headed back to Casa Casuarina, the opulent palatial villa he’d spent millions acquiring and renovating. He walked up five marble steps and slipped his key into the lock on the iron gate.

At that precise moment, a dark-haired man wearing knee length shorts, a gray tank top, a baseball cap, and a backpack surged up the same marble steps. Andrew Cunanan shot Gianni Versace, twice, execution-style. Then he turned around and casually walked away.

Cunanan, 27, described by his own mother as a “high class homosexual prostitute,” was already a wanted man—a suspect in four murders in three states—and had gone into hiding in Miami more than two months earlier. Police soon identified him as Versace’s murderer, and the frantic hunt for a man the media called a serial killer dominated the news cycle.
