At a time when polar exploration was reserved for men, her presence became a testament to the resilience of those who defy convention in pursuit of the unknown.

The Weddell Sea, named after James Weddell, honors the legacy of this 19th-century British sailor and navigator. In 1823, aboard the brig Jane, Weddell reached a record-breaking latitude of 74°15′S, venturing farther south than anyone had before.

His exploration expanded early knowledge of Antarctica, though his achievements gained recognition only after his lifetime. Today, the Weddell Sea stands as a testament to his pioneering spirit.

🌍❄️ The World’s Biggest Iceberg Is On the Move! ❄️🌍

After decades stuck in place, A23a, the world’s largest iceberg, is drifting north again!
At 3,800 sq km (1,500 sq miles)—twice the size of Greater London—and 400m (1,312 ft) thick, A23a broke free from Antarctica in 1986, only to get lodged in the Weddell Sea for over 30 years.

It began moving in 2020 but spent much of this year spinning in a vortex near the South Orkney Islands. Now, it’s finally heading north, a reminder of the dynamic changes shaping our polar regions.

Hear it from Jim, who just got back from his trip to the Antarctic Peninsula aboard the MS Roald Amundsen...

“The trip truly exceeded our expectations! The ship and crew deserve more than five stars for their excellence and devotion to their guest’s happiness. They did everything in their power to deliver 110% of what they promised in the adverts. As advertised, the landings were subject to weather restrictions, but for everyone that we couldn’t do because of weather they substituted another of equal or better value, so mission accomplished!

“One time, we were stopped from traveling to a landing site because the channel was blocked by icebergs, so they took us to another site where they did their first landing on floating sea ice. Awesome! They always did an incredible job of adjusting and overcoming obstacles. And the Drake Passage was calm both ways – bonus!

“It was all so marvelous that it’s hard to pick only one highlight, but for me it was the beautiful icy landscapes everywhere we went, including waking up to glaciers or icebergs out our balcony window when we woke up in the morning. Amazing!”
