๐ŸŒŠ USCG Sector Miami: Defending Our Waters โš“

The US Coast Guard Miami Sector is a vital force in our maritime community. Here are some quick facts about their mission and accomplishments. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

๐Ÿค Part of the US Southern Command ๐ŸŒŽ
The USCG Miami Sector is part of the US Southern Command, a joint command comprised of various branches, including the Coast Guard and more. They ensure security and cooperation in key regions.

๐ŸŒด Beyond Miami ๐Ÿ–๏ธ
Their role extends beyond Miami's shores, covering Central America, South America, and the Caribbean (excluding U.S. territories). They're a pillar of security and support in these vital regions.

๐Ÿ’Š Fighting the Drug Trade ๐Ÿ’‰
Their mission includes drug interdiction, deploying cutters and aircraft to intercept illegal drug trafficking. For example, the crew of Coast Guard Cutter Confidence recently offloaded over 12,100 pounds of co***ne worth $160 million in Miami.

๐ŸŒ International Coordination ๐Ÿค
Interdicting drug traffickers at sea involves significant interagency and international coordination. They work closely with the Joint Interagency Task Force South in Key West, Florida, to make it happen.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Massive Effort ๐Ÿ’Š
The US Coast Guard invests more than $2 billion annually in combatting illegal drugs entering the US. Their at-sea interdictions are the most effective way to disrupt cartels and criminal networks. Since 2017, they've seized or destroyed over 959 metric tons of co***ne.

๐Ÿšข Government Cut: Connecting History and Progress ๐ŸŒŠ

๐Ÿ“… 1922 vs. 2023: A Glimpse of Change

Government Cut, the vital shipping channel linking Miami Beach and Fisher Island, has a fascinating history that changed Miami's maritime landscape.

๐ŸŒ Before the Cut (1922)
Picture this: a single peninsula of dry land stretched from present-day Miami Beach to Fisher Island. Boats navigating to the Port of Miami had to detour around Cape Florida to reach the mouth of the Miami River.

โš™๏ธ 1905: A Game-Changing Decision
In 1905, the U.S. government authorized the creation of Government Cut. This manmade channel cut across the peninsula, providing a direct route from the Atlantic Ocean to the seaport on Biscayne Bay. No more southward detours!

๐Ÿ๏ธ The Birth of Fisher Island
The cut, slicing through mangroves and beach, gave rise to Fisher Island, a distinctive part of unincorporated Miami-Dade County. Today, only the extreme northeast corner remains untouched. And just north of the cut lies the now-famous South Beach.

๐ŸŒŠ Explore Miami's Seafaring Legacy ๐Ÿšค
Join us at Ocean Force Adventures as we navigate the waters, unveiling the stories etched along Government Cut. Dive into the heart of Miami's maritime history!

Ever heard of Miami's Jimbo's? This open-air beer-and-smoked-fish joint was Miami's quirkiest and coolest hangout for nearly six decades until it closed in 2012. Just minutes from South Beach, Jimbo's offered a true slice of Florida and one where you never knew if you might bump into a celebrity or politician alongside the regulars.

Famous as a filming location for movies like "True Lies" and TV shows like "Miami Vice," Jimbo's was rich with stories, including how it got its beer license. Thanks to a call from Bebe Rebozo to his friend President Richard Nixon, Jimbo's got the green light to serve cold ones to thirsty Fisher Island workers. It's even said Nixon himself stopped by for a beer with Jimbo.

๐ŸŒŠ Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of Biscayne Bay with Ocean Force Adventures! Did you know that this unique body of water along the southeast Atlantic shoreline of the United States has an intriguing origin story? Unlike many other bays, Biscayne Bay wasn't formed by the drowning of a river. Instead, it emerged between 5,000 and 2,400 years ago as sea levels rose, filling the depression between two ridges.

Biscayne Bay isn't just any bayโ€”it's a historical estuary and the largest one in Florida. What sets it apart even more is that it's the only large, subtropical, protected bay within the continental United States. This pristine ecosystem provides a vital habitat for a diverse range of marine species, including some of Florida's imperiled inhabitants like the Florida manatee, the smalltooth sawfish, the American crocodile, and Johnson's seagrass.

Speaking of Johnson's seagrass, did you know it's the first and only marine plant listed as "threatened" on the Endangered Species List? This remarkable seagrass thrives in northern Biscayne Bay, contributing to the bay's rich biodiversity.

Explore the wonders of Biscayne Bay with Ocean Force Adventures, where you'll discover the beauty of its aquatic preserves firsthand. Our tours take you through the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserves, established in 1974, spanning from the headwaters of the Oleta River down to Card Sound near Key Largo. With over 64,000 submerged acres, these preserves are a testament to the importance of conservation in preserving this natural treasure.

Explore the Miami legacy of the Vanderbilt family on our Ocean Force Adventures tours. Did you know William K. Vanderbilt, Jr. traded his yacht for seven acres on Fisher Island in the 1920s?

This land swap with Miami Beach developer Carl Fisher led to the creation of the stunning Vanderbilt Mansion, designed by renowned architect Maurice Fatio in 1935. Named Alva Base, after Vanderbiltโ€™s mother and his yacht, this estate once had a seaplane hangar and staff quarters for the Vanderbilt family.

Though Vanderbilt passed away in 1944, the mansion saw various notable owners, including speedboat racer Gar Wood and Richard Nixonโ€™s friend, Charles โ€œBebeโ€™โ€™ Rebozo.

From abandonment in the late 60s to becoming a world-class resort, Fisher Island has a rich history waiting to be discovered. Book your tour today to hear more incredible stories!

Did you know that many of the islands around Biscayne Bay that feature multi-million dollar mansions were once not only spoil islands but mostly man-made?
Hereโ€™s the story of how that happened with Palm and Hibiscus Islands.

In September 1917, Frederick Claude Bigelow LeGro initiated a grand project to create Palm and Hibiscus Islands in Biscayne Bay. LeGro, alongside his partners, established the Biscayne Bay Improvement Company to bring this ambitious vision to life.
Securing the necessary approvals from the War Department, Dade County, and the City of Miami Beach was the first critical step. LeGro then purchased 180 acres of submerged land from the State of Florida for $50,000. This acquisition set the stage for transforming the waters of Biscayne Bay into vibrant residential islands.

LeGro and his partners also got investments from notable Miami businessmen of the time. The Biscayne Bay Island Company formed on January 13, 1918 and aimed to develop and sell property on the newly named Palm and Hibiscus Islands.

The construction phase involved extensive dredging and bulkheading to create the islands. By November 1919, the project was completed, resulting in two islands, each spanning over 55 and 65 acres. These islands were connected to the mainland via the County Causeway, later renamed the MacArthur Causeway, through a series of access bridges.

The creation of Palm and Hibiscus Islands is a testament to LeGroโ€™s visionary leadership and the collaborative efforts of Miamiโ€™s early developers. This project not only transformed Biscayne Bay but also paved the way for future urban development in Miami.

The Bentley Estate on Star Island is a historic gem with a rich backstory. Calvin Bentley, an industrialist who built his wealth as president of several Michigan-based companies and a major General Motors shareholder, bought lot 27 on Star Island in 1922.

By 1924, he had a beautiful winter retreat designed by renowned architect Walter DeGarmo. The estate cost $50,000, quite a sum back then. DeGarmo's Spanish-style design featured spacious hallways, ten rooms on the first floor, and eight on the second, with four fireplaces and a double-car garage. The Miami Tribune praised it as a "unique conception of the Spanish mode," highlighting its cream stucco finish, old tile roofing, and bright blue trimmings.

Calvin Bentley's leadership at Owosso Manufacturing Company and his General Motors stock holdings enabled him to build this remarkable home. His connection with William C. Durant, co-founder of General Motors, significantly boosted his wealth.

Fast forward to 2023, the Bentley Estate saw another major change under John Jansheski's ownership. Jansheski, who bought the estate in 2011, undertook a unique preservation project in 2014. He moved the historic home to the front of the property and built a new 20,000-square-foot modern residence behind it, seamlessly blending the old with the new.

In 2023, Jansheski sold the estate for $57 million to an unknown buyer. The Bentley Estate stands as a testament to Miami's rich history and its evolution over time.

Many guests on our tour ask about the giant sculpture of a woman's face overlooking Biscayne Bay and gazing out at Port Miami. This art installation, "Awilda" was done by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa and she was originally positioned by the sea in Rio de Janeiro. After being moved to Millennium Park in Chicago, where she became a popular icon for the city, Awilda came to Miami for a return to a seaside location.

Awilda represents the artist's large-scale portrait of a young girl from his native Barcelona. A gift to the Perez Art Museum where she is located, the installtion has quickly become an icon for the city, with the girl's serene face, and closed eyes contemplating her waterfront view over Biscayne Bay.
