Una instalación itinerante de un centenar de elefantes indios de tamaño natural llega a las playas de Miami Beach, del 2 al 8 de diciembre próximo, para promover el cuidado de estos animales salvajes y apoyar las comunidades indígenas que viven en su hábitat.
La exposición ‘The Great Elephant Migration’, a cargo de la ONG Elephant Family USA, está «migrando» por Estados Unidos y ahora llega al sur de Florida, donde además se celebra por esta fecha la Semana del Arte en Miami.
Cada elefante es único en la manada que se exhibe, creada por The Real Elephant Collective, una comunidad de 200 artesanos indígenas que viven en la Reserva de la Biosfera Nilgiri de la India, explica un comunicado de los organizadores.
Las esculturas ya estuvieron en Newport (Rhode Island) y la ciudad de Nueva York, y ahora estarán en la playa de Miami Beach para promover la coexistencia con la fauna y el conocimiento indígena.
La campaña incluye la presentación de un perfume inspirado en elefantes de la lujosa casa de fragancias italiana Xerjoff, el patrocinador principal de la exposición.«Esta aventura global de recaudación de fondos beneficia a los esfuerzos de conservación liderados por comunidades e indígenas», señala la organización.Se trata de poblaciones que han encontrado formas de vivir junto a leones, leopardos, elefantes y algunos de los animales más desafiantes del planeta, e inspira una coexistencia pacífica y simbiótica entre humanos y animales.
Las comunidades han creado la manada recuperando una especie de planta invasora llamada Lantana camara que ha afectado 300.000 kilómetros cuadrados de los bosques de la India y ha disminuido las fuentes de alimento para todos los herbívoros.
Utilizando Lantana como material, el colectivo ha recreado cada elefante con el que viven, bien conocido por su nombre y personalidad, en una forma escultórica intrincadamente detallada.«Espero que esta exhibición nos recuerde el asombro que sentimos ante la presencia de animales salvajes y libres y, en nuestro mundo cada vez más urbano, inspire a la humanidad a compartir mejor el espacio», dice Fiona Humphrey, fiduciaria de Elephant Family USA.
Sergio Momo, fundador y director creativo de Xerjoff, subrayó que con la «migración» y el perfume buscan inspirar una conexión más profunda con la naturaleza y un compromiso con la protección del mundo.
La creación de estos elefantes brinda estabilidad financiera, estatus y orgullo a 200 miembros de las comunidades Soligas, Bettakurumbas, Kattunayakan y Paniyas, que coexisten con los elefantes salvajes reales en los que se basa la manada.
Hasta el momento se ha generado más de medio millón de dólares, lo que la convierte en la mayor empresa indígena sostenible de India.
