A very important message from our President and CEO, Jason Liberty... ππ
----------------------------------
Let's do better, for all of us
Yesterday marked another tragic day for humanity. Like all of you, Iβm sad, angry and completely heartbroken by what happened at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. As we start to hear the stories and see the pictures of the victims over the next few days, each one will be a devastating reminder that, once again, our country hasnβt done enough to protect our children at one of the places where they should be the safest.
When I learn of another one of these horrific events, I'm left wondering why, and how? I don't understand why we are here again. And without taking action, itβs like we are making the decision that this is the kind of society we want to be, and itβs unacceptable.
I hugged my four children tightly last night, and I also felt a crushing sadness for the 21 families in Texas and thousands of others who have been affected by gun violence who couldnβt do the same. This morning, when my 16-year-old daughter, Hayden, asked me in tears, βWhy do we continue to let this happen? Daddy, do you think itβs safe for me to go to school?β I was lost for words. All I had to provide were more tears, hugs and hope β for a change in legislation and the need to address a growing mental health epidemic.
It's been over a decade since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut, and more than four years since the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which hit particularly close to home for our employees in South Florida. We continue to see this unthinkable pattern repeat itself. This year alone, there have been 27 school shootings and 212 mass shootings. These are statistics that shouldnβt be part of our lives.
I know we all are feeling for these families in Uvalde. Our thoughts are with them, but thoughts and hope alone wonβt inspire change. During times like these, itβs hard to know what to do, but I encourage you to get involved in some way.
One life lost is too many. We must do better, and together, we can make a difference.
