1928 photo of Tamiami Wildcat Oil Well located on the south side of the Tamiami Trail a few feet west of the Dade County line. In May of 1926 nationally known drilling contractor Neil Scroggins was hired construct the test well for oil and gas. When the Great Miami Hurricane stuck on September 18th the 5 man crew crawled into the fire boxes of the nearby boilers to save themselves. By May of 1927 the nearly 8 inch diameter well had reached 2,700 and still found noting but mud, sand and water. By January of 1932 the well had reached 4,600 feet without success although bass to 8 pounds were being caught in the canal's deep hole directly across the street. Romer photo.

Early 1920’s photo of Hialeah pioneer Matthew Andrew Collins standing in front of the billboard at the entrance to HI-A-LE-AH "Gateway to the Everglades" on Okeechobee Rd. The hyphenated name of Hialeah was discontinued in 1926.
