Selva Negra Estate coffee is farmed by the Kuhl family in the mountainous region of Matagalpa, Nicaragua. This family-owned farm dates back to 1883 and is in its sixth generation of coffee cultivation. Eddy and Mausi Kuhl, along with their daughter Heddy, continue the time-honored tradition started by their German ancestors who immigrated to Nicaragua for the purpose of starting a coffee plantation. Joe Van Gogh directly trades with the Kuhl family through Heddy Kuhl and her Beanealogy Green Bean Program, the US distributor of her family's coffee beans, which ensures an equitable trade to the farm.
The Selva Negra Estate is committed to environmentally friendly and socially conscious practices. In efforts to continue sustainability, the coffee is shade-grown, the coffee by-product is used for composting, farmers use a water processing method that decreases water usage forty times than the average commercial mill, and the farmers continue the development of organic w**d and pest control in their own labs.
Selva Negra is a very successful estate for many reasons, but mostly for its high-quality standards in all we do. This does not end with the quality of the coffee and its processing, or with the quality of the environment with all its sustainable implications, but extends to the quality of life of those that live in the estate. ~ Selva Negra Estate
