Do we find ourselves yelling at our kids more than we like?
Are we yelling and wanting our children to be calm?
Observational learning is the most effective way for children to learn.
Even as a clinician with insight and skill, I still get so flooded with emotions that I can’t think straight.
Literally the neural pathways for our thoughts of discerning the moment are not working. The neural pathways to emotions are much quicker.
So, that really leaves one simple answer: BREATHE
I preach this, I practice this, I preach this, I practice this; and eventually it becomes a habit.
Conclusion: The minute I start breathing, it helps them co-regulate!
Not to mention to regulate myself. Win-win. One kid was out the door regulated in about a minute, and the other one learned about regulating his emotions. Watch video to see how engaged in the conversation he is… Of course they are when it’s about us 😘
