Bachata music and dance originated in the countryside of the Dominican Republic in the 1960s. It is a fusion of Spanish bolero guitar, the Cuban son and African rhythms with roots in Taino Indian culture.

Originally called "amargue" music ("bitter" or blues music) and popular among the working class it was looked down upon by the elite class and considered vulgar and crude to be aired on Dominican television and radio.

In 1990s with the change of instruments bachata grew in popularity in mainstream media.

Today it is a popular Latin music and dance appreciated for its fluid movements and sensuality.

In this video the talented .soy.yas showcases the dance in perfect form and rhythm.

You can listen and dance to bachata on Tuesdays

Have you ever played Dominoes? If so what version?

Dominoes is the most popular game in Cuba as all ages can play it. Traditionally it was played by campesinos to pass the time at fiestas called "guateques" especially when there was no electricity in those days.

Today the game covers all parts of Cuba island and even after a major storm, Cubans can be found playing at tables in the middle of flooded streets, water up to their waist. Passing the time waiting for electricity to return.

Today the tradition has continued to Little Havana Miami. at the Maximo Gomez Domino Park for Miami seniors over the age of 55.

The earliest reference to dominoes dates back to China in the 1200s. The modern game appeared in Italy in the 18th century. Cuban style dominoes is different than American or European game of dominoes.

Cuban coffee is one of the favorite drinks we serve. But there are different types of Cuban coffee so we created this helpful chart to help guide you.

ALERT while Café con Leche does mean "coffee with milk" it is actually served in many Latin American countries and in Miami Hispanic neighborhoods as a boiled cup of milk with coffee added. In Spain it could be half milk and half coffee. There's a varied history there. Be sure to ask at a Miami restaurant so you know what you're getting.

To be safe, if you want an American style coffee you want to order a Cafe Americano (black coffee).

Our Story

Christine Michaels a native Floridian (pictured above) is the creator of Little Havana Tours going back a decade. She fell in love with her new home when moving to Miami in 1997 and all its colorful history and cultural influences from the people, customs, food, music and art. Appreciative of her Hispanic and European heritage and armed with a Master’s degree in business and a distinct passion for the fabric of intercultural communities, Christine decided to launch Little Havana Tours (under the umbrella of Art Deco Tours) and showcase this tucked away historic neighborhood. Not only was Little Havana Tours one of the first privately owned walking tour companies in Miami to offer daily cultural tours, she was the first female to do so. Guests spanning the globe enjoy the boutique, semi-private tour service with an in-depth glimpse into the daily life, influences and traditions of the Cuban culture in Miami. In reading the rave reviews online, it is clear Christine’s middle name should be “passion”. She gives 110% and would rather be leading tours immersing guests into the culture than working in the office.

Joining her are Ralph de la Portilla and Danny Vaisman.

Danny, a 40 year resident of Little Havana is a long-time business man as well. However retirement was too slow for Danny. He found his new calling in leading Little Havana tours. Combining his love for the neighborhood, his personal and business ties to the community and eyewitness accounts of the evolving history, Danny is a natural and is one of the most popular guides in Little Havana. He deftly balances his witty, edgy humor with insightful knowledge of the local history.

Ralph de la Portilla is one the longest-serving tour guides in Little Havana serving as free-lance guide for only a handful of elite companies including operators that host tours in Cuba. An American born Cuban, Ralph has lead tours for 13 years. A former adjunct professor and current job working for the US Census, Ralph has a thumb on past and current demographics and trends. His eloquent delivery is carefully tailored to each audience group from academics, families, corporate types and special occasion groups.
