With our warm and friendly hospitality, more and more people are learning why Bell County is such a great place to visit! Featuring many scenic attractions like the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park and Chained Rock at Pine Mountain State Resort Park you will find something for every taste. For those with an interest in history, you will find many sites that will take you back to the days of

the likes of Daniel Boone, Dr. Thomas Walker, and many others. Located close by in the town of Harrogate, TN you can visit the Lincoln Museum on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University. If nature is more your thing, Bell County is also the perfect spot if you like to hike, fish or hunt on the hundreds of acres of picturesque land. If you like to combine the two, Middlesboro has recently been cited for its geologic history. Middlesboro is the only city in the world to be formed by a asteriod strike. If you like festivals and special events, Bell County is home to award winning festivals like The Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival Memorial Day weekend, or The Cumberland Mountain Fall Festival the first weekend in October.

What happens to recreational fees collected at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park?

Entrance into the park is free. The park also offers a variety of free educational programs for school/youth groups and many free public interpretive programs, such as living history demonstrations, Historic Gap Tours, and Night Hikes. But recreational fees are collected at the park for camping at Wilderness Road Campground, rental of picnic shelters, and two of the park's public interpretive programs - Gap Cave Tours and Hensley Settlement Tours.

Those recreational fees come back to the park and are used at Cumberland Gap for services that directly benefit visitors. Fees may be used for one or more projects or needs during a given year. They could be used to repair picnic shelters, remove fallen trees on hiking trails, improve the tour route through Gap Cave, maintain public restrooms, make improvements at the campground, maintain Pinnacle Overlook, repair the road that goes up to Hensley Settlement, provide staff to conduct Gap Cave Tours, replace backcountry camping equipment, or for any other need or service that directly benefits visitors. Recreational fees provide a vital source of revenue that is reinvested directly back into the park to benefit visitors.

Recreational fees for picnic shelter rentals, Gap Cave Tours, and Hensley Tours have not changed in over 15 years. Recreational fees for camping at Wilderness Road Campground increased in 2022 but are still well below area rates.

The park is proposing to make changes to these fees, and we invite the public to submit comments. You can read detailed information about proposed fee changes on our website at: https://www.nps.gov/cuga/learn/news/cumberland-gap-seeks-comment-on-proposed-fee-changes.htm

We value your feedback. Comments may be submitted before September 4 by email to [email protected] or by mail to Cumberland Gap NHP, Re: Fee Increase Comment, 91 Bartlett Park Road, Middlesboro, KY 40965.

We have a new event calendar on our website at https://www.bellcountytourism.com/events
It is located just under the main event graphic. This calendar is more comprehensive than the graphic with our main events here in the area and will include ones that aren't listed there.

If you have a tourism-related event that you'd like for us to put on the calendar, email info (name of event, date, time, location, and a short description) to [email protected] and we'll make sure to include it. We have tons of events here in the Tri-State region and this new calendar will help you keep track of things to do in the area! Thanks!
