Diamondback terrapin nesting season is just beginning and will continue throughout the summer, so be sure to give North America's only estuarine turtle a "brake"! When traversing coastal areas, be sure to slow down and keep an eye out for terrapins attempting to cross the road and those who are nesting in sandy areas surrounding the Bays.

To help remind visitors to be mindful of terrapins potentially crossing roadways, the Center installs signs along Coastal Highway each spring. Thanks to Center volunteer Jerry Daugherty and his grandsons, Michael and Andrew, for re-installing the signs this year!

So… It’s vacation with the family. You wake up at zero-dark-thirty, so you can roll into town and have a chance at a parking spot that’s not three miles from the beach. Park. Load up the buggy and the kids and walk a half mile to the boards and onto the beach where you toss out your blanket and stake out your 10x10 area. Soon to be surrounded by your fellow beachgoers. Roll up to the boardwalk at lunch for a soggy piece of pizza and a warm soda. Now go move the car, because it's been 3 hours and start all over again.
