There are a lot of amazing safari lodges out there with the absolute best of the best amenities.
But I would argue that the biggest luxury on safari is the location of your lodge.
National parks are the most well known and have the biggest reputation, but it’s the lesser-known reserves that offer a better safari experience, in my opinion.
National Parks
➡️ Don’t allow off-roading, walking safaris, bush meals, and night game drives.
➡️ Often have several vehicles at each animal sighting.
➡️ Park entrances have a queue at opening and closing.
Private Game Reserves
➡️ Owned by a group of safari lodges
➡️ Fewer crowds on game drives, 2 vehicles maximum usually
➡️ Allow walking safaris, bush meals, night game drives, sleep-outs, etc.
➡️ Lodges can still operate game drives inside nearby national parks.
Now that’s not to say that you should skip national parks, they’re popular for a reason.

Sometimes it means sticking with national parks.
Sometimes it means staying at neighboring private reserves, but scheduling game drives through nearby national parks.
It’s all tailored to you, your preferences, and the type of safari experience you want.
