Known for its magnificent ceilings boasting the great Michaelangelo’s mesmerizing frescoes, including the famous Creation of Adam, the Sistine Chapel is one of Rome’s crown jewels holding both weighty religious significance, unparalleled artistic mastery, and astounding historical merit. Located in the heart of Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel was constructed under the reign of Pope Sixtus IV by the architect Giovanni dei Dolci in the 1470s. A variety of the most accomplished artists of the world were commissioned to paint the inside frescos, but it wasn’t until 1508 that Michaelangelo was summoned by Pope Julius II to redo the ceiling. At that time, Michelangelo was at the height of his career and was reluctant to accept the assignment, due to his passion project being sculpting instead of painting. After some persuasion by the Pope, Michelangelo finally accepted the job and painted the masterpiece we know and love today – a work of art that has been cherished for centuries worldwide.
