Yesterday was the final day of the St Croix Sturgeon season and I didn't even plan on fishing as I didn't have any trips booked. At about 4:30pm my friend Brian messaged me and said, hey let's go out there for the last night. So we did.
Turned out it was a great decision as we caught 7 from 6-12 Including an absolute tank at 65x29.5 which is Brian's new PB!
To make it even more fun, Brian's son Adam decided to stop by after work for the last hour and not only got to see his dad catch that giant, but also catch one himself too.

I can't believe it's already March tomorrow! I sure am looking forward to another open water season. Like the past few years, I'll once again be doing a limited number of Spring Sturgeon trips on the Rainy River. I will be doing both morning and evening trips every day from May 1-15. This is a great opportunity to hook into one of the biggest fish you might ever catch in your life. 60" fish or bigger are not uncommon. It does come with a few caveats though. The weather and river levels during this timeframe can be unpredictable and could be anything from snow and freezing temps to sunny and 70, or even flooding out if its banks. We take all of this in stride and deal with it on a trip by trip basis. If weather forces a cancel, you will receive a full refund on your deposit.
I have offered this to past guests already so several of the slots have already been booked, but there are still many to choose from. The ice is deteriorating quickly out on the St Croix. Given the forecast and season ending on Saturday, today will be my last day on the ice for Sturgeon.
It sure is nice out here though!

We had a fun day on the water and Prairie Sportsman did a great job of explaining the Channel Catfish history on the Sauk/Horseshoe chain. Not sure how long this bite will last so I would recommend trying it this year if you get a chance. I'll also be doing a handful of guide trips up there again this summer if anyone is interested.

Sturgeon fishing on the St Croix sure has become popular! Yesterday was probably the most traffic on the ice I've ever seen out there. Still no problem finding our own little spot away from the crowd though. And it was sure nice to have some warmer temps too.
Allen and Cliff had never caught a Sturgeon and they both caught a few nice ones and also about a dozen mudpuppies to go with those.

I wish I had a better report for the weekend, but it was definitely a tough one for Jason and Finley. ☹️
We spent 20+ hours on the ice and 3 different locations trying to figure them out. We did see several 50+" fish at each spot, but they just weren't interested in eating our bait.

Finley caught many Mudpuppies over the weekend and then finally later last night she was able to catch her first Ice Sturgeon! It was a small one, but well earned for sure and came with a lot of lessons. Not many 9 year old girls can sit out in a portable ice shelter for 3 straight nights of non action but she did great!

Thanks for the trip and fun times and great conversations. I wish we could have found a few bigger fish for you. Safe travels back to Kansas.

New video up on my YT channel. I got out for a few hours last night to try out the newest Garmin Livescope. It was a success and I love the HELM feature!
This fish I caught was also tagged. Originally tagged in 2016 at St Croix Falls and it has only grown 5 inches since then.

Took a ride up to the Horseshoe chain yesterday for some Ice Catfishing. Decided to try one of the lakes I have never been on. (In hindsight that was probably not a wise decision) I set up on a point break that dropped into 35ft. I found 20" of ice and pretty easy to get around with a 4WD. There are plowed roads on some of the lakes as well.
Unfortunately no cats around, but thousands of 4-5" Perch and then the Crappies moved in at dusk, so I went home with several of those instead.
Just a reminder that the Richmond Fire Department is hosting Catfish Fest on the Chain this weekend. Some great prizes including $3000 for the biggest Cat! They have also added a catch and release option so you don't have to worry about killing a 20lb fish to enter it.

Dave and Eric joined me for some Ice Sturgeon action last night. It felt a little different out there having a moderate amount of snow on the river for a change. The fish didn't seem to mind though. We marked several bigger Sturgeon early on and had lots of other fish moving through as well.

No giants for the guys, but they both were able to catch a nice one and also lose their Sturginity! 😃 And Eric got to break in a new Mudpuppy Tackle Co rod and Ice Rig I'm trying out too.

Amidst all the chaos of a truck going through the ice nearby and high winds and some snow and freezing rain, the only thing we could bring up the hole was a few mudpuppies. :(

Still a great time hanging out with Vincent and Charles and we did see some giants swim though our not 1 but 2 Livescope setup. 😄

Charles also earned a nice Generation Catfish hat for his first Mudpuppy and for being so patient.
