Dave and Eric joined me for some Ice Sturgeon action last night. It felt a little different out there having a moderate amount of snow on the river for a change. The fish didn't seem to mind though. We marked several bigger Sturgeon early on and had lots of other fish moving through as well.

No giants for the guys, but they both were able to catch a nice one and also lose their Sturginity! 😃 And Eric got to break in a new Mudpuppy Tackle Co rod and Ice Rig I'm trying out too.

Amidst all the chaos of a truck going through the ice nearby and high winds and some snow and freezing rain, the only thing we could bring up the hole was a few mudpuppies. :(

Still a great time hanging out with Vincent and Charles and we did see some giants swim though our not 1 but 2 Livescope setup. 😄

Charles also earned a nice Generation Catfish hat for his first Mudpuppy and for being so patient.

I received several messages about this as I fish that area often. I was not out yesterday and was also unaware they shut down the power plant on Saturday. In years past they would keep it running 24/7 so it was easy to see the dangerous area and avoid it. They would also mark the area with thin ice signs.
Now that it's only a "on demand" plant, they turn it off and it creates a thin ice area which I think it's even worse than open water. I will post a wcco news story link in the comments, but as Ben said, no ice is ever safe. I do think however that Xcel does share some of the responsibility here. They created the dangerous area they should put up a few warning signs, like they have in the past. It's no different than marking a spearing hole or aeration system (which is required by law).
Glad everyone was ok, it could've ended much worse.

I still have plenty of guide trip openings between now and when the Sturgeon season ends March 1st. While I can't guarantee you'll catch a giant, I will have you set up for a great opportunity to catch one with all the proper gear including a Livescope and a nice warm shelter ready to go for up to 3 of you. The ice is in good shape, so it's a great time to get out there!

A fun one with Eric and Ryan last night. Most of our action was early on and we even caught a nice walleye, a silver redhorse and of course several mudpuppies. It was also nice for a change that it wasn't 20 below or 30mph winds or snowing or raining. 😄

Jeremy had never been ice fishing so his wife Aundrea gifted him an Ice Sturgeon trip for Christmas. He brought his friend Zack who had never caught a Sturgeon. Jeremy caught a nice one pretty quickly and then Zack followed up with an absolute TANK!

Evan and Aiden braved the bitter cold and wind last night and were rewarded with a great night of fishing! Not only that, they both love Football so we set up the tablet and watched both NFL playoff games while we waited for Sturgeon to find our baits.

WOW, that wind was crazy last night!! Setting up and taking down a large hub shelter by yourself is quite a chore in the dark when it's 15 degrees out and blowing 40mph and blasting snow at you.
I had to park the truck right next to the shelter to use as a wind block, but that also caused the ice to sag a bit and we ended up with a moderate pool of water inside.
It sure was nice knowing that if I did everything slow and methodically that my Striker gear would keep me dry and warm. And that it did!
A little more of the same on tap for tonight and I'm ready to go.

Richard and Lucas had several opportunities at some nice Sturgeon moving though last night but we just weren't able to get hooked up with any them. However, Lucas was able to catch his first Mudpuppy and add that to his life list. Thanks for the fun night guys!

Trevor and Barry all the way from Northern Saskatchewan are here in town for the 1st annual Minnesota Sportsmen's Resort, Lodge & Outdoor Products Show at Canterbury Park in Shakopee. They joined me last night with Bret Amundson for a night on the ice. It was a lot of fun and we caught some fish too! No giants, but a couple of surprise jumbo perch and of course a few mudpuppies and a spectacular sunset! Thanks guys and I hope the show goes well this weekend.
