On October 4, 1869, a tunnel that was being built underneath the Saint Anthony Falls collapsed. This created a sinkhole in the river so bad that the falls were in danger of collapsing, which meant the Hydropower plants would also be in danger too. The next day a plan was hatched to plug the sinkhole by throwing in as much big material as could fit (the piano was only a rumor, but it's fun to imagine). However, shortly after Mother Nature would have the last laugh as all that effort was destroyed by the powerful water immediately. After weeks of work day and night, the water was diverted as a temporary solution. It wouldn't be until much later when the United States Army Corps of Engineers built concrete aprons to stabilize the waterfall.

The only known death from the building of the Stone Arch Bridge occurred when a worker fell into the Mississippi River in the winter and passed due to hypothermia. James J. Hill, one of the richest men in the world around this time, was the one building the bridge. Having a death associated with it would be bad press and he'd have to pay the widow. However, he convinced the officials to list "Lack of Valor" on the death certificate and he never had to pay.

See the city on a Segway! Our Magical History Tours take you on a thrilling journey through the past, telling you the tales and seeing the sights of the Minneapolis Riverfront while you zip around on a high-tech modern day chariot! We'll cruise over the Stone Arch Bridge and around the Mills District and Nicollet Island, where Minneapolis began and where stories and legends abound. Our three-hour guided Magical History Tour includes a free training session, refreshment break at the Mill City Museum and use of a helmet. Stops along the tour include: St Anthony Main, Father Hennepin Park, Pillsbury A Mill, Stone Arch Bridge, Mill Ruins Park, Gold Medal Park, Guthrie Theatre, Mill City Museum, West River Parkway, Hennepin Avenue Bridge, and Nicollet & Boom Islands. Also try our St. Paul tour featuring Summit Avenue, Cathedral Hill, and the State Capitol grounds; and our Minneapolis Sculpture Garden Tour featuring the Walker Sculpture Garden, the Stone Arch Bridge, Target Field, Loring Park, Nicollet Mall, and Central Library. Check out our Sculpture Garden Insider Tour, and ride through bustling downtown Minneapolis.
