—PATTERN CHANGE GOING INTO FEBRUARY—

1/28/24 @ 8pm

As we go into February, there are increasing odds that our pattern is going to change. This is good news for winter weather enthusiasts and snowmobilers. Multiple phases will be involved with this. The picture depicted below is during the middle of next month (Feb 15th). Exact timing is yet to be determined, as this is just long-range model data, but the first effects of the change could be felt as soon as the week of Feb 5th. That is already next week, so it is coming rather quickly!

The first effects would include a more active pattern. Not necessarily cold temperatures just yet. The second phase would likely occur as we go towards the week of February 12th, with temperatures beginning to cool off from where we've been at... getting closer to average (and out of the 30s eventually for highs). When the real cold "arctic air" would move in would be the third weekend of February and into the third full week of the month (Feb 18th). By "arctic air", we are talking 10-15°F below average, possibly colder. Timing for each of these phases could and likely will change still.

There is potential for a few large winter storms with this. Chances will ramp up for lake effect snow, which would be very beneficial to our Northwoods communities. The northwesterly flow (which we haven't seen much of at all this winter) will allow for the LES to occur. The colder air will also aid in that process. Wind chills below zero will be possible towards the third full week of February.

This is really the only hope left for those who would like a winter this year. El Nino has really put a damper on our winter season, and for those who think that winter is over and that you can now throw in the towel... it's not!! WINTER IS COMING, and we very well could continue this pattern into March. Stay tuned for future updates.

We could see a Big March snowfall this season!!

What can I say? I’ll start with the question that everybody has, where is the snow? Believe me, if we could make it snow we would. This is a sport that we not only enjoy making our community trails the best they can be, but we also enjoy riding them just like all of you. As much as I am disappointed that I’m not able to put miles on the sleds with my family, I am most disappointed in not seeing all of you on our trails, and in our local businesses. This is not the start to the season that all of us were expecting, but nonetheless it is what we are dealt. Just to say it simply, it SUCKS. What can we do? Some say nothing and when it comes to the weather that is true. But when it comes to making the best of it, that's all on us. I have a challenge for our entire snowmobile family. Let’s continue with the winter as if we have ten feet of snow and fresh groomed trails. We owe it to all of our local businesses. They are all here for us year after year putting their all into making our winter experiences the best it can be. They are all staffed and ready to serve us. Their work families are looking to make money for all of their families as well as their employers to continue to be there for us year after year. We owe it to them to be there for all of them even if we can’t ride. Please don’t cancel out on them. Come and visit your awesome snowmobile friendly community even if snow conditions are nonexistent at this moment. I understand it’s not perfect but we can still make the best of it. We have to! It’s what sledders are all about. Uniting in order to make our sport the best it can be. Happy New Year to all of you and think winter!!
